About Judith Rayment

Judith Rayment was not the daughter of Rev. Joseph Glover, who did not have a child “Judith.”

Judith Finne

  • Born before 12 Apr 1629 in Stepney, Middlesex, England
  • Died 31 Oct 1702 at about age 73 in Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony
  • Daughter of William Finne and Mary (Charwood) Finne

  • Wife of John Rayment — married 26 Apr 1668 in Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony

Disproven Origins

Judith is often erroneously reported as the daughter of Jose Glover (abt.1602-1638), usually by wife Sarah Owfield, but sometimes by wife Elizabeth (Harris) (Glover) Dunster, even as the daughter of Jose and his mother, Susan Goodwin. See Research_Notes.

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Finne-83

Judith Finne was baptized at St. Dunstan's, Stepney, Middlesex, England, 12 April 1629, said 7 days old, the daughter of William Finne and his wife, Mary (Charwood) Lofte.[1][2] Judith died at Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts, 31 October 1702.[3][4]

She married (1) at St. Dunstan's 17 April 1651, William2 Woodbury.[5][6] He was baptized South Petherton, Somersetshire, England, 7 May 1620,[7] and died intestate before 23 January 1667/8 (date of inventory).[8] William Woodbury was the son of William Woodbury, Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth Patch.[9]

On 31 March 1668 the court granted the administration of her late husband's estate to Judith, further ordering that £50 due to three of the children, "given them by their grandmother," was to be paid "at age or marriage." The "younger daughter" was to receive £10 "at the age of eighteen or time of marriage."[10] (It is not known which grandmother left the legacy to William and Judith Woodbury's children. See Research Notes.)

Judith married (2), probably Beverly, after 26 April 1668,[11] as his second or third wife, John Rayment.[12] John survived as her widower, but not long. He died 18 January 1702/3.[13]

Family

Judith (Finne) (Woodbury) Rayment was the mother of ten children--only four of whom are known to have survived to adulthood.

Judith and her husband William Woodbury were the parents of eight children,[14][15]

  1. Infant Woodbury, a C[h]risome, buried St. Dunstan's, 22 September 1652.[16]
  2. Mary Woodbury, baptized St. Dunstan's, 15 February 1653/4, said 5 days old,[17] buried St. Dunstan's, 25 April 1654.[18]
  3. Elizabeth Woodbury, baptized St. Dunstan's, 17 March 1655/6, said one day old;[19] married John Richards.
  4. Mary Woodbury, baptized St. Dunstan's, 1 June 1657, said 5 days old,[20] buried there, 15 December 1658.[21]
  5. Hannah Woodbury, baptized St. Dunstan's, 1 October 1659, said one day old;[22] married Roger Haskell/Haskall.
  6. William Woodbury, baptized St. Dunstan's, 30 July 1663, said 4 days old, [23] buried there 30 August 1663.[24]
  7. William Woodbury, born probably Salem, Massachusetts, 10 March 1665[?/6],[25] baptized First Church of Beverly, 26 April 1668;[26] no further record.
  8. Judith Woodbury, born probably Salem, 22 November 1667,[27] baptized First Church of Beverly, 26 April 1668;[28] married Ephraim Herrick.

Children Elizabeth, Hannah, William and Judith Woodbury were admitted to Beverly First Church when it was established. From the chuch records, "24 : 5 : mo. 1668. It beeing propounded unto ye Brethern of this Church that they should give in to ye Pastor ye names of their Children in Minority wch were dismissed from Salem Church together wth their parents to be under the watch of this church as they grow up. In Answer thereunto take the names following wch are the Children of this Church yt were borne before the Church was gethered and settled here ... The children of William Woodbury decased by his wife Judith, are William, Elizabeth, Hannah & Judith."[29]

Judith and her husband John Rayment were the parents of two children, born and baptized Beverly,[30]

  1. Nathaniel Rayment, born 15 March 1670,[31] baptized 6 August 1671;[32] married Rebecca3 Conant (Lot2, Roger1).
  2. Benjamin Rayment was born 25 August 1672,[33] died 1 September 1672.[34]

Research notes

Frequently mistaken a Glover. Judith is often seen in user-contributed sources as the daughter of Jose Glover (abt.1602-1638), usually by wife Sarah Owfield, sometimes by wife Elizabeth (Harris) (Glover) Dunster, even as the daughter of Jose and his mother, Susan Goodwin. Her association as a Glover has always seemed to lack reliabe sources and sound analysis.

  • (1) FindAGrave memorial 13166142 (2022). This memorial was updated in 2022, but for a long time, it reported she was the daughter of Jose and "Susan Goodwin" (who WikiTree shows as Jose's mother), referencing "Information from NEHBR, Vol. 71 and the Patch family website" as well as another graver.
  • (2) FamilySearch FamilyTree (PID K4GL-TFD), reports (2021) she is the daughter of Rev. Jose Glover and first wife, Sarah Owfield. Profile includes notes calling her Judith Fine and as Judith (Glover) Fine, suggesting she had a first husband ____ Fine. The PID has 52 attached sources. including a Fine-Woodburry 1651 English marriage record.
  • (3) Geni.com (2021) reports Ed "Judith Raymond (Glover)" is the daughter of "Rev. Joseph Glover" and his wife, "Elizabeth Dunster."
  • She was not a daughter of Jose by either his first or second wife--(a) Sarah (Owfield) Glover's mother, Thomasine, left a will naming her three Glover grandchildren as Elizabeth Glover, Roger Glover and Sarah Glover; (b) Elizabeth (Harris) (Glover) Dunster was survived by two children--Priscilla (Glover) Appleton and John Glover. See "Elizabeth Glover"; <Wikipedia>

Old notes

Judith was born about 1627, probably in Sutton, Surrey, England. Her parents were Rev. Josse (Jose) and Susan Goodwin Glover of Sutton. Judith Glover was the second wife of William Woodbury. His first wife was Hannah Haskell, but she must have died before they had children. He then married Judith. They had four children, including Judith, probably born at Beverly, Massachusetts. William died in Beverly about 1667. Judith then married John Raymond (1616-1702), on August 20, 1668 in Beverly. Judith died in Beverly on October 31, 1702. It is likely that her resting place is with Raymond, who died around 1699.

Information from NEHBR, Vol. 71 and the Patch family website; also thanks to graver Michael Raymond for information on her parents and last husband.
