- Wikipedia US Continental Congressman. He received a formal education, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Poughkeepsie, New York. He was a member of the New York Provincial Congress (1775-77) a member of the council of safety in 1777 and served in the New York State Senate, (1777-83). He founded the town of Plattsburg, New York in 1784 and was elected to the Continental Congress in 1785, serving until 1786. After his term, he was a delegate to the New York State constitutional convention in 1788, continued the practice of law and was a regent of the New York State University from 1791, until his death at age 72.
