According to Genesis , Judah married the daughter of the Canaanite Shuah, by whom he had three sons, Er, Onan, and Shelah. Er married Tamar, but died childless. According to custom his widow was given in marriage to his brother Onan, who was slain for misconduct; and she was then promised to the third son, Shelah. This promise not having been fulfilled, she resorted to stratagem, and became by Judah the mother of Pharez and Zarah. Pharez (or "Perez") was ancestor of the royal house of David. Genesis:46,12 And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zerah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Pharez were Hezron and Hamul.

And Tamar his daughter in law bare him Pharez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five. Zerah and Perez are the second set of twins (Genesis 38:27-30). Zerah's hand came out of the womb first, and the midwife tied a thread around it, but Zerah pulled his hand back into the womb. Then Perez came out followed by Zerah with the thread still tied around his wrist.

Numbers 26:20 The sons of Judah according to their families were: of Shelah, the family of the Shelanites; of Perez, the family of the Perezites; of Zerah, the family of the Zerahites.

Judah, in the Old Testament, name of the fourth son of Jacob and of one of the 12 tribes of Israel; the early history of the tribe may be represented in the story of Jacob's son (see GENESIS 29, 35, 38). According to the Book of Exodus the tribe formed the vanguard in the march through the wilderness out of Egypt, and the succeeding biblical books recording the later history of Israel portray Judah as predominant. After the reign of Solomon, king of Israel and Judah, the tribes of Judah and Benjamin formed a separate, southern kingdom (1 Kings 12-2 Kings 25).

Marriage Notes for Judah and Tamar (Tamara): Judah wanted to have Tamar cremated because he thought she was a harlot, having unknowingly fathered the twins Zerah and Perez. Tamar convinced Judah that he was the father, so Judah said she was in the right against him because he failed to marry her to his son Shelah which he had previously promised. Judah did not again cohabit with Tamar afterwards.
