Joseph was a son of John Rickard, Sr. [d. 1726, son of Giles Rickard, Jr.] and his wife Mary. He was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on 7 February 1683.[1] There is no dispute that his parents were John and Mary Rickard, but in those years there were two John Rickards (first cousins) in Plymouth married to women named Mary, and there has been some dispute as to which of the two couples were Joseph's parents. Two versions of Plymouth Vital Records (cited above) identify him as a son of John Rickard "Sr", son of Giles Rickard and Hannah Dunham. In contrast, the list in Plymouth Church Records of children baptized in 1683 includes "Joseph, son of John & Mary Rickard Junior."[2] The assignment to John Jr. in the Church Records may reflect a distinction made between John Rickard, born about 1625 and still living at the time of birth, who would have been the older ("senior") John Rickard in the community, and Joseph's father John, born in 1652, and thus a younger ("junior") John Rickard. Plymouth Vital Records names Joseph's father as John Sr., and there is no mention of Joseph in the will of John Rickard Jr.

The Mary who was the wife of Joseph's father's was not Mary Cooke. There is evidence that the Mary who married his father probably was Mary Snow, but this identification is not certain.

Joseph Rickard and Deborah Millar were married on 19 February 1707 in Plymouth, Massachusetts.[3]

They resided in Plympton, Massachusetts, which previously had been the western precinct of Plymouth. Their children were born in Plympton.
