The Mayflower Society does not recognize the commonly asserted marriage of Jonathan White to Margaret Elizabeth Alexander. Her existence is unsupported by any primary sources, and she is most likely fictional. Please do not add her as a spouse to this profile, or her supposed children: Alexander and Margaret. [1]
Most likely she is a mixture of Jonathan's second wife Elizabeth Unknown, and the correct mother of supposed son Alexander White. Her origins are traced to a 1939 genealogy by Roscoe White [5] which in turn cites an 1870 family bible. Genealogists do not routinely accept family genealogies written in Bibles. What is acceptable from the 17th century are land, probate or town records. It has been found that town clerks in the Northeast USA especially have been quite good at keeping records from early America which they will gladly share with researchers. For a more detailed explanation see here.
The information below is not currently recognized by the "Mayflower Society" who are the leading authority on Mayflower Genealogy, [1] It is widely believed to be false and is unsupported by primary sources. However as it is also widely repeated, so it has been included here for reference ...
