John de Botetourt, 2nd Lord Botetourt [1]

John de Botetourt, 2nd Lord Botetourt was born circa 1318.[1] He was the son of Thomas de Botetourt and Joan de Somery.[1]

He married, firstly, Maud de Grey, daughter of Sir John de Grey, 1st Lord Grey of Rotherfield.[1]

He married, secondly, Joyce la Zouche, daughter of William la Zouche, 1st Lord Zouche of Mortimer and Alice de Toni, before 31 May 1347.[1]

He died on 4 April 1386.1,2 He was buried at Halesowen, Shropshire, England.[1] His will was probated in 1386 at Lambeth, London, England.[3]

Career:

• He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Botetourt [E., 1305] on 25 November 1324.[1]
• On 16 July 1338 he had livery of his mother's lands.[1]
• He fought in the French wars, where he distinguished himself.[1]
• In 1341 he had livery of his father's lands.[1]
• On his death, his barony is held to have become dormant until succeeded to by his granddaughter, Joyce.[1]

• Eleanor de Clare (3 October 1292 – 30 June 1337) was the wife of the powerful Hugh Despenser the younger. She was born in 1292 at Caerphilly in Glamorgan, Wales. She was the eldest daughter of Gilbert de Clare, 6th Earl of Hertford and 7th Earl of Gloucester, and Joan of Acre, daughter of Edward I and Eleanor of Castile; thus she was a granddaughter to Edward I of England. With her sisters, Elizabeth de Clare and Margaret de Clare, she inherited her father's estates after the death of her brother, Gilbert de Clare, 4th Earl of Gloucester at Bannockburn in 1314. ....
• Eleanor was abducted from Hanley Castle in January, 1329, by William la Zouche, 1st Baron Zouche of Mortimer, who had been one of her husband's captors and who had led the siege of Caerphilly Castle. The abduction may in fact have been an elopement; in any case, Eleanor's lands were seized by the King, Edward III, and the couple was ordered to be arrested. At the same time, Eleanor ....
• Eleanor's troubles were by no means over, however. After Eleanor's marriage to Zouche, Sir John de Grey, 1st Baron Grey de Rotherfield claimed that he had married her first. Grey was still attempting to claim Eleanor in 1333; the case was appealed to the Pope several times. Ultimately, Zouche won the dispute. Eleanor remained with him until his death in February 1337, only a few months before Eleanor's own death. Eleanor and William had children:

• Alice de Toeni or Tosny, Countess of Warwick (26 April 1284 – 1 January 1324/25) was a wealthy English heiress and the second wife of Guy de Beauchamp, 10th Earl of Warwick (1272 – 12 August 1315), an English nobleman in the reign of Kings Edward I and Edward II. • Following the sudden death of Guy de Beauchamp at Warwick Castle on 28 July 1315, which was rumoured to have been caused by poisoning, Alice married thirdly on 26 October 1316, William la Zouche de Mortimer, 1st Lord Zouche de Mortimer (see Baron Zouche), by whom she had a son and daughter:[2]

• Alice de Toeni died on 1 January 1324/25.[3] The de Toeni lands and manors passed to her eldest son Thomas de Beauchamp, 11th Earl of Warwick.
• Her widower, Lord Zouche, later abducted and married Eleanor de Clare, widow of Hugh Le Despenser, the Younger. Lord Zouche had been one of Le Despenser's captors and had led the siege of Caerphilly Castle.
