About John Watkins

Biography

The Gedding pedigree in Gage names not only John Watkins, but also specifically the wife of John Watkins, who is said to be a daughter of Roger Cheney of Buckinghamshire.[1]
A well known Roger Cheyne from Bucks would be the parliamentarian, whose family was associated with Drayton Beauchamp.[2]
This seems to imply that John Watkins might be the same person who a parliamentary biography identifies as an "accomplice" of what might be his two brothers-in-law, John Cheyne and Thomas Cheyne. In this case, Watkins was from Stoke Hammond.[3]
The Girders.net website has the following notes:
- John WATKINS (ca.1405-ca.1470) of Stoke-Hammond, Buckinghamshire.
- 25 Nov.1448 Pardoned for not appearing before the King. (C.P.R.1446-52 p.205)
- 1450 On a commission of gaol delivery. (H.P.p.925)
- 1453-4 M.P.Liskeard. (ibid.)
- 1459 M.P.Wootton Basset. (ibid.)
- Jul. 1468 One of the founders of a chantry at Thornton, Buckinghamshire. (ibid.)
He has a History of Parliament biography (which is not online on the HOP website):
- WATKINS, JOHN {1405-70); of Stoke-Hammond, Bucks. Exeter's servant.
- M.P. Liskeard 1453-4 ; Wootton Bassett 1459.
- In 1430 John Watkins of Stoke-Hammond, gent., and John Cheyne of Drayton were complainants in a suit. He was sworn to the peace in Bucks, in 1434 ; on a comn. dealing with King's Langley in 1438 ; pardoned, as of Stoke-Hammond, gent., for his outlawry in Somerset in 1448 ; on a gaol delivery comn. in 1450. In 1457 Sir Robert Vere (q.v.) was chamberlain to Henry, duke of Exeter, and Watkins was the Duke's receiver in Devon.(Cat. Anc. Deeds, vi. p. 305.) He was one of the founders of a chantry at Thornton, Bucks., in July 1468. It is curious that he never appears on the Pardon Rolls; perhaps he appears there as Walters or Watts and was missed.
