Notes: had livery of his lands in 1459-60, joined Edward IV, was summoned to parliament from 1461 to 1483, and was sworn of the privy council in 1471. He was employed in Britany in 1475, and was present at the coronation of Richard III, who appointed him lord treasurer in 1484.

James Touchet, 5th Baron "Audley was first married on February 24, 1414/1415 to Margaret, daughter to William de Ros, 7th Baron de Ros and Margaret Fitzalan. Margaret was daughter to John Fitzalan and Eleanor Maltravers. They were parents to three children:

John Touchet, 6th Baron Audley (born circa 1420 - September 26, 1490).

Margaret Touchet (born circa 1422 - died before 1480). Married Richard Grey, 3rd Earl of Tankerville.

Anne Touchet (born circa 1427 - 1503). She married Sir Thomas Dutton. Sir Thomas Dutton died in the battle of Blore Heath along with his father-in-law James Touchet, Lord Audley, 5th Baron of Audley of Heighley Castle."

John Tuchet, 6th Lord Audley (of Heleigh) was the son of James Tuchet, 5th Lord Audley (of Heleigh) and Margaret de Ros.1 He married Anne Echingham, daughter of Sir Thomas Echingham and Margaret Knyvett, before 1456.1 He died on 26 September 1490.1

John Tuchet, 6th Lord Audley (of Heleigh) succeeded to the title of 6th Lord Audley, of Heleigh [E., 1313] on 23 September 1459, by writ.1 In 1461 at Calais, France, he was taken prisoner.1 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1471.1 He was joint commander of the Army in 1471.1 He held the office of Master of the King's Dogs on 5 July 1471.1 He held the office of Lord Treasurer [England] in 1484.1

John Tuchet, 6th Baron Audley 1423-1490.

John Tuchet was the son of James Tuchet, 5th Baron Audley circa 1398-1459. He married Ann Echingham, daughter of Sir Thomas Echingham with whom he had seven children. He acquired his title by writ in 1459 on the death of his father.

In 1461 at Calais, then belonging to the English crown, he was taken prisoner by the Earl of Warwick whilst on a military expedition during the Wars of the Roses. He there met the future Edward IV and was persuaded to defect to the Yorkist cause and fought for Edward at the Battles of Mortimer's Cross, Barnet and Tewkesbury. He was subsequently invested by Edward in 1471 as a Privy Counsellor PC and later 1484 served as Lord Treasurer and Commissioner of Array. He was joint commander of the Army and held the office of Master of the King's Dogs in 1471.

He died on 26 September 1490 and was buried at Shere, Surrey. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Sir James Tuchet, 7th Baron Audley 1463-1497.

PURITON AND DOWNEND

Three hides of land at Pirition, assumed to be Puriton, formed part of Gastonbury abbey's estate by 854. (fn. 7) In 1066 six hides at Puriton were held by Queen Edith. By 1086 possession had passed to the church of St. Peter in Rome. (fn. 8) By 1186–7 Maud de Chandos, widow of Philip de Columbers (I) (d. c. 1185) and a descendant of Alfred d'Epaignes, the Domesday owner of Nether Stowey, held the land, which by 1212 was part of the barony of Stowey. (fn. 9) Maud was followed, as at Nether Stowey, by her son Philip de Columbers (II) (d. c. 1216), her grandson Philip (III) (d. 1257), and her great-grandson Philip (IV) (d. 1262). The last was followed successively by his sons Philip (V) (d. 1277) and John (d. 1306). John's heir was his son Philip (VI) who died childless in 1342. Philip's widow Eleanor, who had held the estate jointly with him, died in 1343 when her heir was her nephew James Audley, Baron Audley. James died in 1386 and was followed by his son Nicholas, who died childless in 1391. (fn. 10) On Nicholas' death a claim to the estate was made by Thomas Stawell as descendant of a sister of the last Philip de Columbers, (fn. 11) but ownership was retained by the Audleys in the person of Elizabeth, widow of Nicholas. On her death in 1400 the heirs were declared to be John Tuchet, grandson of Joan, one of Nicholas's sisters, and Margaret, wife of Roger Hillary, the other sister. (fn. 12) John Tuchet died in 1408 and Margaret childless in 1411, both leaving John's young son James as their heir. (fn. 13) The two halves of the manor remained separate during James's minority (fn. 14) but had been reunited by 1428. (fn. 15) James Tuchet, Baron Audley, died in 1459 and was succeeded by his son John (d. 1490) and by John's son James. (fn. 16) James was attainted and executed in 1497 for rebellion against the king and in 1510 the manor was granted for his life to Sir William Sandys (cr. Baron Sandys 1523, d. 1540). (fn. 17)

Puriton and Downend manors were restored to John Tuchet, James's heir, in 1512, (fn. 18) but in 1538 Sandys sold his life interest to Edward Elrington, who already had covenanted to assure the reversion to Tuchet. (fn. 19)
