About John Tilton, Sr.

John Tilton emigrated in 1639 from Warwickshire, England to Lynn, Massachusetts. Mary and John Tilton were among the first Americans to become Quakers. The Dutch Governor of New Amsterdam, Peter Stuyvesant made continual efforts to stamp out "these raving Quakers " by fines and imprisonment. John Tilton and his wife Mary were among those who had to endure hard persecutions. Mary was charged with the crime of having gone, like a sorceress from door to door to lure and seduce the people, even young girls to join the Quakers. John was charged with having permitted Quakers to quake at his house in Gravesend.

John Tilton Sr. Lived an active, usefull and honorable life and as one of the pioneer developers of the State of New Jersey.

Thomas Tilton was born March 1, 1652, at Gravesend, Long Island, the sixth child of John and Mary (Pearsall) Tilton. The colony of Gravesend was started by Lady [Deborah Moody], as a place of religious freedom, and John Tilton and his wife joined almost immediately, emigrating from New England. (Back in New England, his wife Mary had been chastised as an "Anabaptist"). John Tilton became one of Lady Deborah's staunchest supporters, and more or less her "right -hand-man".
