The original baptism records published early in the 20th century where found to be in error. In 1998 Clifford L Stott republished the baptism records in The American Genealogist Vol 72 p 81-90 and the genealogy of this family was summarized on pages 209-219. Again in 2004 The New England Historic Genealogical Society published the "The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton 1878-1908" reflecting the current state of research. In both of these works we find indeed that John Thayer who married 3 August 1589 in JOAN LAWRENCE was the John Thayer baptized 6 May 1561

Will of JOHN TAYER of Thornbury, co. Gloucester, yeoman. Dated 31 Dec. 1600; proved March 1600[-1]. To be buried at Thornbury. To 3 daughters Alice, Agnes and Evelyn (?) Tayer a messuage and tenement in Thornbury. To son John a gold ring. To wife Jone Tayer all goods and she EExecutrix. To mother Mary Cooke. to brother Thomas 3s 4d. To Mr. Manning, minister of Thornbury, 10s. Overseer: Hihn Hilse, Senior, and appoints to be joined with him as overseers John Hilse, Junior, and bother Thomas Tayer, and to them 20d for their pains. Witnesses: John Manning, Thomas Tayer, John Hylse and Jo: Hylse. Memorandum (after sealing will): To daughters Alice and Agnes Tayler 8 pounds, being 4 pounds to each of them.
