John married Anne Franks. Anne was born about 1625.

Children from this marriage were:

4 M i. James Stodgill was born about 1660 in Essex Co., Virginia and died about 1704 in York Co., Virginia about age 44.

+ 5 M ii. John Stodgill was born about 1665 in Essex Co., Virginia and died about 1725 in Orange Co., Virginia about age 60.

  • John STOGDELL now known as Sturgill aka Stagell Born ca 1615/1625 England His father may be John.

Middle names were not commonly used then but may be Daniel

The name indicates Scots-Irish heritage

John would have been buried in his local parish cemetery or on his property.

He may have arrived Oct 18, 1650 from Saint Stokes Parish, Somerset Cty, England.

He was brought as a headright of James Hurd to Essex Cty Va. James paid his transportation to the New World and John had to work it off.

19 years later, In 1669 he was granted 100 acres on the waters of the Potomac. He probably lived his life out there.

He may have married a Miss Franks or Ann Franks, probably in America (ca 1695/1700?).

NOTES FROM GENE ROOKS Regarding the 1703 date of the gift of a calf by John STOGDELL/STAGELL/STODGHILL to Daniel FRANKS in Essex Co., it seems much more likely that both of these men in 1703 are sons of the original emigrants bearing the same names, and that the marriage of a FRANKS daughter was one that occurred in just the few years prior to 1703. We know the wife of John STODGELL of Essex Co. of that generation was an Ann (in one document). My guess, which is as good as anybody's, is that she was Ann FRANKS, and not Ann MADISON, as has long been surmised, disputed and really cannot be proven by existing records.

Here is an abstract of the gift record: "John STAGELL marks a hole and nick in the right ear, a crop and a slit and underkiel on the left ear. Daniel FRANKS marks a half spade and underkiel on the right ear, a crop and underkiel in the left ear. Sir, be pleased to record both these marks for me and the subscriber, but the latter in behalf of Daniel FRANKS to whom I gave a calf of the same mark with the female increase." (1703 Essex Co. Dd&Will Bk 11:20).

In this case, STODGELL had given FRANKS the calf. You wouldn't wait until 1703 to record a transaction that took place around 1655. This is for an event that had taken place in recent years. John STODGHILL married his wife Ann in the area of 1695/1700. I would welcome input from any researchers of these lines. Gene Rooks in Gotha

NOTES FROM DORIS BRUNS The John Stodgell who gave the calf to Daniel Franks is assumed to have m. Ann Franks. A calf at that time was an expensive gift. John was b. in Somersetshire, England in 1615 and immigrated to Rappahannock Co., VA abt. 1650. It was their son, John "Daniel" Stodgell who m. Ann Madison. Doris Bruns
