About John 'the Weaver' Putnam, III
Biography
John Putnam III was involved in witch trialsJohn Putnam III was a weaver.John Putnam, son of John, was baptized at Salem, Massachusetts on 14d 5m 1667. As shown below, he married Hannah (--) before 1692. On 6 December 1695, Capt. John Putnam and his wife Rebeckah gave to their son John Jr. the 90 acres he dwelled on.
John is generally styled 3rd in records. He was made freeman in 1690, and held many town offices. In connection with his father he is supposed to have built the "old Clarke House," not far north of Oak Knoll. Under date 1 April 1709, Rev. Joseph Green notes the burning of "John Putnam 3d's house."
Care must be taken in looking at documents for John Putnam Jr. (3rd), since there was another John (son of Nathaniel), who married a Hannah Cutler and was called "Junior" to distinguish him from John 3rd's father John. However, John 3rd's weaver trade usually helps clear any confusion during dates they were all living.
John Putnam III was involved in the Salem witch trials. John Putnam, weaver, and his wife Hannah in their deposition against Rebecca Nurse, Mary Estick, and Sarah Cloyes stated that their child died about the middle of April 1692. On 15 April 1692, John Putnam tertius daughter born 15 February last died, as recorded in Rev. Parris' records. That this was not referring to a child of "John Jr." (the son of Nathaniel) is evident, not only by the trade stated in the deposition, but also by the fact he had twins born 16 August 1691, and thus his wife could not have had another child in February 1691/2.
John Putnam 3rd, weaver, and his wife Hannah signed many deeds, for example on 17 June 1710. On 2 March 1693/4, Nathaniel Putnam sold land to John Putnam tertius, weaver. On 21 August 1697, Samuel Parris sold land to John Putnam Tertius, around the time Parris finally left Salem.
John Putnam tertius was called to court on 25 March 1698 in a case of Ezekiel Cheevers vs Thomas Baker and John How. There was an apparent land dispute, but eventually on 6 November 1711, it was agreed that John Putnam Jr., weaver, would firmly become owner of the land.
John Putnam of Salem testified on 11 July 1735, aged about 70, in regards to land his father John Putnam had purchased from Zaccheus Gould.
In his will dated 10 January 1731/2, proved 21 March 1737, John Putnam, yeoman, mentions his wife Hannah, son Caleb, daughter Mehitable Pope, daughter Meriam Putnam, daughter Ruth Flint, daughter Hannah Prince, and grandson Moses Putnam.
