As a young man, John left home and went down into the Northwestern part of Brunswick County where he met, courted and Married Miss Ann Russell. John and Ann resided in a number of places during the early years, lived in Granville Co. NC for a period and then went back to Virginia and lived at their former home in Lunenburg Co. until the end of the Revolutionary War. They later carried their family down into Spartanburg District, South Carolina and finally into Greenville District, South Carolina where John died in the year 1825.
