The name Crowell was originally written CROWE, The surname of Samuel, who died in Boston in 1646, is written on the Suffolk Records CROWES. In 1669, in a grant of a house lot to Samuel of Yarmouth, his and Yelverton's surname is written Croell. For the last century the uniform orthography has been Crowell, though in conversation it is often pronounced Crow.^ It is an ancient name in Great Britain. In the Rolls preserved in the Tower of London of the year 1254 Gilbert Crowe, of Berkshire, is named. [6]

[p. 26] At the Prerogative Court held at Barnstable 6 March, 1688/9, "the Estate of mr John Crow Snr Late of yarmouth deceased" was settled as follows: "John Crow the Eldest Son .... to have and Injoy the house and all the Lands .... after the death of his mother mehittable Crow and the sd mehitable Crow to have and Injoy the third part there of during her natural Life and thre pounds In Apparrel to Samuel Crow the Son of sd deceased and Just debts being paid the sd mehittable the relict of sd deceased to have the third part of the Rest of the Estate: mehittable Crow and Lidya Crow the Daughters of sd deceased having had alredy considerable of theirs the other two thirds of his personal estat to be equally devided between his Children Samuel Crow Jeremiah Crow Elizabeth Crow Susanna Crow and Hannah Crow and the sd John Crow the Son of sd deceased to pay out of his owne estate the Sum of twenty Shillings to Thomas Toby grand Son of sd deceased within a twelve month after the date above writen and to his sd Brother Samuel Crow the sum of forty Shillings presently after the marriage or death of the sd mehittable Crow his Mother"
The inventory was taken 14 February, 1688/9, by Paul Sears (who made his mark) and John Hall; was sworn to by the widow 6 March, 1688/9, and recorded 9 March, 1688/9, by Joseph Lothrop, Deputy Register. [2]
