Although little is known of Peter Lentz, he is thought to have been born near Heidelberg in the Electoral Palatinate, immigrating to South Carolina around 1752 either directly from Germany or via England. According to family legend, as soon as he arrived in South Carolina, he sent for his German sweetheart, Chloe, and waited 18 months for her to arrive. He married Chloe around 1753, and raised a large family with her.

Peter and Chloe moved with their family between South Carolina and North Carolina, living as farmers. They lived first near Charleston, South Carolina, then in Rowan County, North Carolina, and then in South Carolina again before living their remaining years in Buncombe County, North Carolina, where they held land at Cain Creek and the French Broad River. Both Peter and Chloe probably died in an epidemic that occurred about 1808.

Peter and Chloe are believed to have been buried in the Lance Family Cemetery, which was moved to a single tomb in the 1920s.
