Came to Virginia in April, 1714, with Gov. Spottwoods's colony of Germans; settled first with them at Germanna in what was then Spottsylvania (now Orange) County; moved with them later (about 1721) to Germantown in Fauquier.

John Fishback of Virginia was born Johannes Fischbach in Truppbach, a small town about a mile and a half north of Siegen, Nassau, Germany. The city of Siegen is located on the River Sieg, about 60 miles southeast of Cologne and northeast of Frankfort. This town was the refuge of the family of William the Silent, Prince of Orange, during the mid 1500's, and was also the birthplace of Peter Paul Reubens, the famous painter, in 1577.

This family name means "Fish Brook" in German, and the towns of Upper (Ober) and Lower (Nader) Fishback (Fischbach) are found in this area. Johannes was baptized in the Reformed Church of Seigen, the nearest church at the time. His baptismal record shows his father as Philip Fischbach, born March 1661, and his mother as Elizabeth Heimbach. Philip's father was Johannes Fischbach, born November 23, 1631.

Johannes Fischbach was a skilled metal miner who emigrated to Virginia with 11 other families at the request of Alexander Spottswood, the Governor of Virginia appointed by Queen Anne in 1710, through his agent Christopher Baron de Graffenreid. Spottswood desired the group to establish silver and iron mines on his land. The group of 40 people arrived in London in the autumn of 1713 expecting to be met with funds for further travel, but Graffenried's estate had met misfortune, and they had to stay the winter near Maidstone, England, hiring themselves out to support themselves. Travel commenced in early March, 1714, and they arrived to Virginia late in April, where they were given favorable leases on Spottswood's land on the edge of the frontier 30 miles above the falls of the Rappahannock River. They were given a fort and two cannons to protect them, exclusive hunting rights to the area, and a seven-year reprieve from paying taxes. The community they established was named Germanna. It was the first German settlement in Virginia.

John Fishback, as he called himself in his new country, was one of the first 2 males of the colony to be formally naturalized. This allowed the men to obtain land for the colony, which they bought in 1718 and moved to about 1721. This colony was called Germantown, not far from the area known for the Battle of Bull Run. Here the settlers farmed their land. John went on to buy several more sizeable parcels of land.

John's was married to the pastor's daughter, Agnes Haeger, but she died in 1725, leaving him with 2 sons and 2 daughters, the oldest only 10 years old, the youngest anewborn. He remarried a woman named Mary, and had 4 more sons.

Came to Virginia in 1714; one of the original Germanna Colonists of 1714 that Governor Spotswood brought from Germany due to their technical skill at ore mining and smelting. Later moved to Germantown in Fauquier County, Va.

Posted on the Fauquier, VA mail list on 10-01-1999: "Johannes Fischbach, a native of Germany, and first owner of the Fleetwood tract near Jeffersonton, Culpeper County, was the progenitor of five governors of states of the union which his grandson, Martin, fought to create. Johannes, later known as John Fishback, was the son of Philip Fishback, who lived in the little village of Truppback in Germany. He joined the colony of mine workers brought to Germanna by Governor Spotswood of Virginia in 1713 or 1714. In 1721 he moved with 11 other original Germanna settlers to form a settlement at Germantown in Fauquier County. He was one of the three first Germanna colonists to become naturalized American citizens. In 1730 he acquired a patent for the Fleetwood tract in Culpeper, then Spotsylvania County, and built the house, still standing. Five generations of Fishback descendants owned the home site from 1730 to 1893. The old Jefferson Academy was established in 1835 on land in the village of Jeffersonton, then owned by Colonel Frederick Fishback, son of Martin, and father of William Meade Fishback, Governor of Arkansas, 1893-95, who was born at the old Fishback home in the village. The other four governors who were descended from Johannes Fischbach were James Sevier Conway, Elias Nelson Conway, and Henry Massey Rector, first, fifth, and sixth Governors of Arkansas, respectively; and James Lawson Kemper, Governor of Virginia, 1874-78.
