About Johann George Bortner, Sr.

George Bortner was born about 1732 to Balthasar and Maria Eizabetha Bortner, originally of Oberhochstadt, Landau Pfalz, Germany. The family arrived at Philadelphia in 1732. Family legend holds that he arrived "in his mother's arms," but he doesn't appear on the ship's list, along with his parents and siblings Jacob and Anna, indicating that he may actually have been born shortly after arrival in America.

George was raised with his family near Tulpehocken Township, Berks County. By 1759, as a young man, he had crossed the Susquehanna River into Lancaster (later York) County, where on 7 Sept 1759 he purchased 100 acres of land from his brother in law Charles Shaffer, who had married George's sister Philippina.

In 1760, George married Maria Appolonia Floucher; she was born about 1735. George and Appolonia resided in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pa, where George was enlisted in Captain Sherer's Co., 5th Batt., York Co. Militia during the Revolution.

George and Appalonia had children George 16 Feb 1761, Ludwig 15 May 1762 (m Elizabeth Gantz), Philip 8 Spt 1766 (m Margaret Humbort), John 1768 (m Julia Gantz), Peter 1770 (m Elizabeth Wayne), Jacob 14 Jan 1778 (m Catherine Snyder), Michael 20 Nov 1780 (m Margaret Markel), Julia, Christiana 1759, Elizabeth 1766, and Catherine 1765.

George and Appalonia were members of the German Reformed Church (a Calvinist denomination). He died after January 1801, in York County, Pa. He is buried in the Fissel's Union Church Graveyard, in Cordorus, where he lived for over 40 years.
