About Jesse Emerson

One the prominent settlers of 1811 was Jesse Emerson, who came from Kentucky and located about five miles southwest of Princeton on the northwest quarter of section 28, township 2, range 11. He erected the usual log house of the day and began carving out of the wilderness a home for himself and family. Upon the organization of the county he was called upon to serve as associate judge of the court and afterward held other offices and places of trust. He was quite a conspicuous man among the early settlers.

With these nine children, Jesse, in his own words, "moved from Lincoln County, Kentucky, & settled in Indiana Territory on the 10th day of April, 1809." Stormont adds that he located

... on what is now known as the John Martin place, between Princeton and Owensville, being one of the earliest settlers of that locality. He and his family floated down the Ohio river on flatboats to Evansville, from there coming to Princeton, their first camp being on the present site of Judge Lamb's residence. At that time but little settlement had been made in that locality, the land being covered by a dense forest.
Tartt (1884, p. 61), locates their settlement at "northwestern quarter of Section 28, Township 2, R. 11". He goes on to say:

Upon the organization of the county, he was called upon to serve as associate judge of the court, and afterward held other offices and positions of trust. He was quite a conspicuous man among the early settlers.
Jesse is thought to have been the postmaster of the "Emersonville" post office, the second post office in what is now Indiana, operative from 1812 to 1816 He lived near Princeton until 1817, "when he and his eldest son, Alan, moved across the Wabash River and helped found the city of Albion, Illinois."
