About Jerome Trico

notes

In The American Genealogist; Vol 35; Mr. George McCracken writes: "A sufficient number of instances appear in the Dutch manuscript records in which Catalyntje is recorded as Catalyntje Jeronymus to make it certain that her father was named Jeronymus in Dutch or Jerome in French."

[This is the only "evidence" which i have noted of a name for this person - Alex Moes]

(Blake Raplee) Jerome Tricaud, of family originally from Douay, Hainault.

[Unknown value as it quotes no source, Douai is 64km west of Prisches - Alex Moes]

(notice: a recent transcription of the parish of St Nicolas, Valenciennes, Dept du Nord records that list the following baptisms which all list the father's given name as Pier (Pierre?). This contradicts the " JORIS " given name on this profile.... unless: JORIS had "PIER" as a second given name... (?)

The baptismal information suggests that the TRICO family was from VALENCIENNES not "PARIS" as all these children were baptized in Valenciennes.

For the Trico family: Here is what is in the records

  • Pier (1595) (boy) < Pier II
  • Catherine (1596) (girl)
  • Marie (1601) girl
  • Marie (1601) < {duplicate?}
  • Pasque (1604) girl

(Note: there are other Tricos also... with dates that are _out of range_ as possible siblings... perhaps these additional ones are nieces and nephews > offspring on Pier II But, in my opinion it is just as likely that "Pier" is just another given name for Jean, the subject of this profile. After all, Jean Pierre is a quite common given name in French naming tradition)

(Once again: each of these children's fathers is named "Pier" in the St. Nicolas parish records ... could "Pier" be another given name for Jeronomis?)

another happenstance

Then, in the same parish, there is listed: George Rapareilliet baptised April 28th 1604...

possible source of confusion

It occurs to (this researcher) that "St. Nicholas, Pris" might be a bastardization of St. Nicolas, ==parish==
in Valenciennes... in other words, Pris was confused with PARIS in someone's notes.... At any rate the family lived in Valenciennes... not elsewhere! (contributed by Michael M. van Beuren January 25, 2014).

Culturally, this would make sense: Protestant Huguenot/Walloons of the West of France were engaged in horrific conflict with the predominately Catholic centre of France. It would not have made much sense to have the (quite young) Catherine and George joining as a couple from such diverse and treacherous backgrounds. In addition, the distance from Valenciennes and Paris is considerable.. A common-sensical version would rather be that the two of them grew up in the same locale. ie. Valenciennes...

I do wonder if Catherine was actually baptized as "Pasque" (???) and then took her sisters name... due (possibly) to early death of the older sister. (pure conjecture)... Screen shots of the baptism records of Catherine and Pasque are included here.

Text:

Jeronimus Trico is reported to have died within a year of the birth of his daughter Catalynie Trico as such it is most probable that he passed at the same location where the aformentioned birth event occurred..

[This first point is wrong, we know Catharina had a younger sister born in 1611 so their father cannot have died in 1606 - Alex Moes]

The marriage record of Joris Janssen Rapalje and Catalynie Trico states that Catalynie Trico’s place of birth as Pris, Waesland.

The Waasland is a region in Flanders, Belgium. It is part of the provinces of East Flanders and Antwerp. In the north, it borders with the Netherlands. The other borders of the Waasland are with the Scheldt and Durme rivers. Research shows that the aforementioned area does border on, and in some locales includes, what was the old County of Hainaut. Unfortunately the Waasland is not at all associated with the Walloonian culture. As such it is very possible that the either the person writing the record or the person providing the information considered Waasland as synonymous with the area known as “French Flanders.” French Flanders is a part of the historical County of Flanders in present-day France. The region today lies in the modern-day region of Nord-Pas de Calais, the department of Nord. The region now called French Flanders was ceded to the Kingdom of France, and became part of the province of Flanders and Hainaut.

That Catalynie’s place of birth was at a place called Pris, in a region much larger that the Waasland of today. Research shows that there is not a populated place in present day Belgium, France, Netherlands, or Luxembourg with the name of Pris.

The most promising place for of birth for Catalynie is Prisches a village in the Nord department in northern France located only 25 miles from Valenciennes.

The following brings to this conclusion:

(1) the first four letters in the spelling are “Pris”, The place is located near where Joris Janssen Rapalje was born, and the place is well within the the old County of Hainaut.

parentage

As we can't even be sure of his name, nor any dates, how can any of his parents be known?
Multiple sets of parents currently shown which cannot be resolved without sources, in fact they should probably be disconnected.

Alex Moes

No evidence to support Jan Trico or T Trico as fathers. Disconnected Sept 2014.
