James Tenney, the paternal ancestor of the large and numerous family of that name of Upshur County. Was a native of Massachusetts, and lived at Cold Rain, in that state at the time he immigrated to West Virginia. Little is known of his ancestors or his life prior to his coming to Buckhannon settlement, except that he was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and was drawing a pension for his services in the war of Independence up till his death. December 30 1841. Some dispute exists as to the time of his emigration to the Middle Fork river. His daughter, Avis Tenney, afterward the wife of Nicholas Ours, born in 1803, claims that she was three years old when her parents moved here, which would make the date of their immigration 1806. James Tenney's wife was Thankful Shippy of Rhode Island, who was 93 years 10 months and 20 days old at the time of her death.
