About James Stout

NOTE: James Stout is almost always confused with James "Turler" Stout. These were two different men.

James Stout (b. c. 1732, d. 4 May 1810); did patriotic service in New Jersey; married to Catherine Stout.

Catherine Merrill Stout

"I now take up James, the third brother who married Catherine Stout, daughter of John Stout, by whom he had three sons and four daughters - Jesse, Amos, Charles, Rachel, Elizabeth, Catherine and Anne.

  1. Jesse married Abigail Lott, daughter of Phelix Lott. by whom he had five sons and I think seven daughters.
  2. Amos married Catherine Drake, the daughter of William Drake, by whom he has a number of children, but as he moved to the Lake Country soon after he was married, I can neither tell the names or number of his children.
  3. Charles married Arlissa Saxton, a daughter of Jared Saxton, by whom he has a number of children.
  4. Rachel married John Manners, by whom she had two sons, the eldest named James Stout (Manners), the other John --The History of the Stout Family, By Nathan Stout, 1823, page 12

Some Notes on Deaths

James Stout --- Catherine's husband -- died May 10, 1810, in Hunterdon County, according to an abstract of his will, which cites his children Jesse, Amos, Charles, Rachel, Elizabeth, and Catherine (Bryant). It also mentions "his share in the library."

A James Stout Jr. died Jan. 31, 1807, in Hopewell. A James Stout Sr., died Aug. 12, 1782, and deeded his Amwell Township plantation to his son James. Another James Stout died in 1784 in Amwell.

Catherine Stout died May 4, 1805, but her probate documents appear to be empty.

Lydia Stout died November 28, 1803, in Oxford Township, Sussex County, NJ. Apparently she died intestate, suggesting her James Stout died earlier. However, a James Stout bought land in Independence Township in Sussex on Sept. 5 1804. A different (younger) man one assumes.
