

James Stoodley arrived to New Zealand on the Lady Nugent in 1841. He was 9 years old. Son of John William Stoodley (1806-1885) & Eliza Champ (1808-1863). He arrived with his parents & 3 siblings, George (age 7), Sarah (aged 5) & William (aged 3). A sister, Elizabeth Stoodley, was born on board 2 months after leaving Gravesend
They lived for a time in Kelburn, Wellington, then bought a farm in Taratahi.
His sister Jane (born Carterton) & brother George, married Clifton siblings.
In 1881 James was farming 108 acres of freehold on Tupurupuru block, Greytown
In 1884 he was in Taupanui, Gladstone
In 1885 he next married Mary Ann McLaggan (1840-1926) in Carterton
In 1893 he had freehold section 91 at Tupurupuru
In 1897 He is listed as having 192 Sheep at Tupanui, Gladstone
