- Immigration: before 1676 He immigrated before 1676 He was transported sometime prior to 1676 by Nathaniel Heathcote in a ship commanded by Capt Ely. In 1676, Heathcote transferred his land rights for transporting Murray and others, to George Yate (Early Settler's List, Liber 15, folio 540, State Land Office, Annapolis).2

Birth
James was born 1665 in Tullebardine, Scotland. The LDS ancestral file lists his father as John Murray, the Marquess of Atholl, and his mother as Jane McClean. Both of these people were descended from the Kings and Queens of Scotland, England, and much of Europe. The Morays or Murrays, of Tullebardine, were one of the most powerful of the Highland families of Scotland. The alleged connection to parents John Murray and Jane MacLean is not proven. The connection to Jane MacLean may have been a genealogical error based on his transactions with Hector Maclane in Maryland. Hector Maclane, however was not a relative on his mother's side, but rather the husband of one of James' wife's sisters.

Abstract of Baltimore County Will Liber 1/91 James Murray of Patapsco River in the County of Baltimore in the province of Maryland. I give to my eldest son, Josephus Murray at the age of 21 a tract of land at the Garrison with the land of the later survey joining unto it called The Addtion being 400 acs. to him and his heirs forever, but if he should die before he comes of age it should rebound to my son, Melchesidech. I give to my son, Josephus at the age of 21, four cows and calves and one white servant with provisons for the first years and such necessaries as shall be convenient for two or three people. I give my son, Morgan Murray, at the age of 21, 300 acs. of land out of that tract called Morgan’s Delight lying on the east side of Jones Falls joining to Friends Discovery to him and his heirs forever. If he die without heirs, my son, Jabus Murray shall enjoy it. I give to my son Jabus Murray at the age of 21 years 200 acs. of Morgans Delight and 100 acs. of land called MacClean's Hopyard it being purchased of Hector MacClean in lieu of 100 acs. at Huntingridge to him and his heirs forever. But if he should die before he comes of age to rebound to Morgan Murray and his heirs, or to the next kin of the name forever. I give to my son, Jabus, when he comes to the age of 21, Jables Gilleard being about 300 acs. joining unto Morgans Delight and MacCleans Hopyard to his heirs forever. I give to my son Melchesidech at the age of 21 my now dwelling plantation containing 350 acs. commonly called by the name Duck Cove to him and his heirs forever. I give my loving wife, Jemima Murray my whole and sole executrix and my personal estate after my debts are paid to be equally divided among my children as they do come of age and likewise my will is that Richard Cromwell and Thomas Cromwell be left trustees to see this my will performed and in case they should die before my children come to age I leave it to the care of West River meeting. signed by James Morray and sealed 9 MAY 1704 witnessess: George Thorpe, Edward Clark and Richard Joans[9] His estate was appraised on 29 JUL 1704 and valued at 267.2.3 pounds plus debts due to his estate of 8.2.8 and debts in pounds of tobacco at 7,968. Interesting items in the estate include a parcel of old books and pictures.

The parents of James Murray have not been proved with any primary source evidence. Many have assumed he is related to the Marquis of Atholl because he named one of his land grants in Maryland with that name. A recent update of the biography of the Marquis of Atholl on Wikipedia mentions a mistress named Jean MacLean as the mother of James. Amos Eagle Elliston. There is a possiblity that James Murray was an illegitimate son of the Marquis of Atholl. He had the funds to acquire at least 1,650 acres of land in the 28 years he lived in the Maryland colony. The original will of James Murray is still on file at the Hall of Records in Annapolis and a portion of the seal is still attached to it. The seal apppears to be a crescent between three stars, the Murray coat-of-arms.[1] On land deeds recorded in Baltimore County Land records, James always signed his name as James Morry and apparently used a wax seal which is indicated in the record books by an X.[2]

"The name of the county is Ann Arundel, Maryland. The document following this entry says Nathaniel Heathcote sold his rights for transporting James and 40 others to George Yate who received 2,050 acres of land for transporting the 41 people. " Mr. Jim Murray further asserts: "...After carefully examining the handwriting, I believe it should be folio (805). Anyway, it says: "Then came before me Mr. Thomas Stanley of the County of Arundel and proved upon oath that the persons herein named were transported into this province upon his own proper account to inhabit...Transported in Capt. Ely these rights following in the year 1676' and lists 23 people, including seven women. None appeared to be couples.' 'James Murray' is 12th on the list.

DNA has proven he was NOT the son of the Marquis of Athol of Scotland, and was not even born in Scotland, but England and came from the Morrey's of Cheshire, England. He is somehow related to Humphrey Morrey/Murray 1st Mayor of Philadelphia whose family were Quakers. I am descended from James family and my DNA matches the Morrey's of Humphrey from Philadelphia.
