About James Maker, Sr.
James Maker (also known as Macor) was born about 1650, perhaps at Gosnold on Cuttyhunk Island. It is one of the Elizabeth Islands near Martha's Vineyard, then in the Plymouth Colony, British Colonial America. He died on 8 July 1731 at Harwich on Cape Cod, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.
- Not a known son of Ruhamah Maker, of the Wampanoag and Christopher Teague Maker. Her dates show as similar to this James Maker (or Macor).
- Not the husband of Mercy Newcomb. She died as Peter Newcomb's relict in 1724. James Maker's 2nd marriage must have been to a different Mercy Smith.
Added by Elwin Nickerson II about my Great Grandfather:
Notes for RACHEL: Of the Wampanoag Tribe. Grantee Lot 6-Gorham , Maine. NOBODY ever took advantage of this Grant. WHY I wonder!!!!!!! Is it Perhaps that when the Legislators awarded the Grants on Narragansetts NO9 Gorham Maine , they later saw that James Maker (Maker Family)were of Native American Birth. MANY Documents exist on the Land this Land Grant Award. Photo engraving- Battle Of Quebec"1690 /ECN/

James did not have any children with his second wife, Mercy Smith, married 15 Feb 1703/4 at Eastham by James Sparrow.
James lived in Yarmouth, Eastham, Harwich & Brewster. Eastern shore of Follins Pond just north of Kelley's Bay, "Maker Roade", Bass Pond to the way from Yarmouth to Harwich, possibly Mayfair vicinity of Dennis.
History of Brewster: Bakers's Pond is in the eastern part and the line that divides the town from Orleans passes through it. It was called by the Indians "Pomponeset". James Maker, an earlier settler, had a house near the pond." (5) pg 837
"Among the settlers between 1700 and 1750 were...James Maker" East Brewster is the post office designation of the territory in the northeast part of town. Among the early settlers here were Stephen Hopkins,...James Maker..." "The Principal settlement now is along the main road which records show was laid out by the Town of Eastham in 1668." (5) pg 899
From "Early Chatham Settlers", page 585, mentions land that William Nickerson had on ye south side of James Makers. It states that "only still allowing to Elizabeth ye mother of ye sd James to gather cherrys and other fruit for her spending in ye summer time and ye sd James to take off ye lumber and old bords of ye old house therron."
JAMES MAKER JR Added by Elwin C. Nickerson-The name of James Maker appears in the record when he, Richard Berry, and two Lumbert brothers, Jedediah and Benjamin, were charged for smoking of tobacco, at the end of Yarmouth meeting house on the Lords day, in the time of exercise. For this offense, brought before the Court March 2, 1668/9, they were fined 5 shillings each. PCR, Vol. 5, p16. Although this was during the probationary period from Maker's previous offense, the Courts took no note of the former. He was a landowner by 1673, when James Meker paid a rate of 11 shillings in Yarmouth, April 29, 1673. Freeman, History of Cape Cod, Vol. 2; p195. This was a minor tax so that his holdings were not extensive. Freeman asserts that the list of names in these rates may be in relation to here the various people lived in the town. Names appearing just before Maker' s are Silas Sears and Mr. Mayo, names following are Nathaniel Baker and Thomas Gage. Silas Sears was then of East Dennis, Nathaniel Baker of the Bakertown section of South Dennis, in the vicinity of Ezra Baker School on Route 28, and Thomas Gage of the Gagetown section of South Dennis, now Great Western Road. The research of James Gould of Cotuit James Warren Gould, First Comers of Dennis James Maker was probably living on the eastern shore of Follins Pond, not far north of Kelley's Bay, a neighbor of Samuel Ryder to the south and the former holdings of William Nickerson to the north. In a deed of Rebecca Paddock to Eben Paddock, 17 Mar 1734/5, a lot of land is described as being on the north side of the Cart way called "Maker Roade" which comes from the Bass Pond to the way that leads from Yarmouth to Harwich, Josiah Paine papers, NEHGS. This cart way would be in the Mayfair vicinity of Dennis. /ECN/

- https://www.britannica.com/place/Elizabeth-Islands "Elizabeth Islands, chain of small islands in southeastern Massachusetts, U.S. They extend southwestward for 16 miles (26 km) from the southwestern tip of Cape Cod, between Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound. Administratively a part of Dukes county, the islands constitute Gosnold town (a township area settled in 1641 and incorporated in 1864). The larger islands are Nonamesset, Naushon, Pasque, Nashawena, and Cuttyhunk. They were visited in 1602 by the English navigator Bartholomew Gosnold, who built a fort and established a short-lived (three-week) colony on Cuttyhunk, the westernmost island, 18 years before the arrival of the Mayflower Pilgrims at Plymouth. The name Cuttyhunk may be a distortion of a Wampanoag Indian term meaning “a thing that lies out in the great water."
