Note: Between 1644 and 1647, "Elizabeth Clarke, wife of James Clarke, she is bro Wrights daughter," joined the Roxbury Church [Printed "Roxbury Church Records," p. 86]. There is no other record of James Clarke's wife Elizabeth. When he made his will in 1667, his wife was Richard Wright's daughter Elinor. James Clarke's first child was baptized in the Roxbury Church and was named Elizabeth; there is no recorded child by the name of Elinor. Many subsequent authors (including Savage) have concluded that the church record was in error and that the name "Elizabeth" should have read "Elinor." It is possible, however, that Elizabeth was Elinor's sister and the first wife of James. 4
