About James Barnes, of Isle of Wight County

James Barnes (1668-1720) was born to Thomas Barnes (1645-1682) and Diana Barnes (1645->1683). James married Sarah Jones (b:1668). Their children were Edward and Thomas.

The James Barnes b. 1668 in this profile is not the father of Edward Barnes, of Edgecombe County

Biography

James Barnes was born after 1661 (not 1652) in Isle of Wight, Virginia. His parents were Thomas Barnes (d. 1683) & Diana.

Thomas Barnes wrote his will on Jan 28 1682, recorded or filed with courts the day after his death on 9 June 1683. See < FamilySearch Memories >. He names three underage children: son John Barnes; son James Barnes; daughter Anne; and wife Diana Barnes. So James Barnes was born no earlier than 1661 and probably much later.

James married Sarah Jones "in 1677" [SIC: This must be an error. He would have been 11 years old at best.]

Together they had the following children:

  1. Edward Barnes. Married Elizabeth.
  2. Thomas Barnes, Sr. Married Martha.

He died circa 1720 in Isle of Wight, Virginia

Parents: Thomas Barnes, Diana Barnes (born Bragg?)
Siblings: John Barnes, Ann Barnes
Wife: Sarah Barnes (born Jones)
Children: Thomas Barnes, Edward Barnes

Evidence needed to support "Diana Barnes" as daughter of James Bragg, Sr..

The relationship between James Bragg & James Barnes, of Isle of Wight County, son of Thomas Barnes, of Isle of Wight County, is not stated. There has been an assumption that Braggs was Barnes' grandfather, but any other relationship, such as godfather, is also possible.

The will of Thomas Barnes, written the 28 January 1682/83 was probated the 9 June1683 in Isle of Wight, VA. Thomas indicated in his will that his children John, James and Annie were under the age of eighteen. He gave each of his children two cows , not to exceed five years of age, and their calves. You should also be aware that it has been shown fairly conclusively that Edward Barnes (will devised December 5, 1761, Proven March, 1762; md. Sarah Pope) of Edgecombe County, NC was NOT the son of James Barnes (will devised March 2, 1719/20, Proven October, 1720) of Isle of Wight County, VA. Researcher Margaret Van Ness Nelson published a well documented article making the case that James' son Edward was actually the Edward Barnes who devised his will in Southampton County, Virginia on July 15, 1761 (Proven March 11, 1762). These two Edward Barneses were different men.See, "Which Edward Barnes was the son of James Barnes, Isle of Wight County, Virginia?" by Margaret Van Ness Nelson, published in "Trees of Wilson: The Newsletter of the Wilson County Genealogical Society", March, 2000, Volume 9, Number 3, pages 4-7.
