Ida de Longespée of Salisbury

Ida de Longespee daughter of William de Longespee and Ela de Salisbury married Ralph de Somery and William de Beauchamp. NOT to be confused with Ida de Longespee who married Walter FitzRobert de Clare of Dunmow.

Marriage to Ralph de Somery was arranged in her childhood and may never have been consummated.

    IDA Longespee (after 1206-after 1260).  William Earl of Salisbury granted the manor of Belcham to "William de Beauchamp…with Ida his daughter, who was the wife of Ralph de Sumeri" dated 1220[1803].  It is likely that Ida was still a child at the time of her first marriage.  Ida’s mother’s birth can be dated with reasonable accuracy to [1191/92], as Gilbert Crispin who was the second husband of Ida’s maternal grandmother died in 1190.  If that is correct, it is unlikely that Ida was born before 1206, assuming that she was the oldest child of her parents (of which there is no proof).  m firstly RALPH [III] de Somery Baron of Dudley, son of RALPH [II] de Somery & his wife Margaret Crassus (-before 1220).  m secondly ([1220]) as his second wife, WILLIAM de Beauchamp Baron of Bedford, son of JOHN de Beauchamp & his wife --- (-1260). 

Disambiguation: William Longespee and his wife Ela Salisbury had two daughters named Ida. One married Walter Fitz Robert. The other married Ralph de Somery and married 2nd William de Beauchamp. [1]

Idonea de Longspee was born about 1208. She passed away about 1268.[5]

Sir William, Ida's second husband, died on 15 August 1261.[2]

Property

In July 37 Henry III [1253], Little Linford manor co Buckingham, was held of Sir William de Bellocampo Bedeford and Idonea his wife of the honour of Newort Paynel.[4]

Several writs were issued in October 46 Henry III [1261] regarding William de Bello Campo de Bedeford, and the resulting Inquisitions held in Staunford town, Ravenesden, Hardwyk and Dilewyk, all in co Bedford, found William died on the Sunday after the Assumption of the Blessed Mary,[2] which is celebrated on 15 August (see Wikipedia:Assumption of Mary).

The Inquisition at Dilewyk was held in response to a writ dated 22 October 46 Henry III because of a petition from Ida de Bello Campo, and it found Lady Ida de Bello Campo held Delewyk manor for life by fine made in the King's court between her and the said William.[2]

An Inquisition on the Sunday after the Conversion of St Paul, 51 Henry III [1266], found that Linford manor co Buckingham was held of the fee of Newport of the barony of Sir Roger de Somery, and Lady Ida de Bello Campo held it in dower.[6]

Research Notes: The following is from Ancestral Roots, Line 30-26/27, concerning the Ida Longespee who married Walter Fitz Robert: Though peerage articles, including CP [Complete Peerage] V 472, have long identified Ida No. 27 [who married Walter Fitz Robert] as a daughter of Gen. 26 [William Longspee & Ela FitzPatrick], it is clear that their daughter Ida actually married (1) Ralph de Somery (dsp) and (2) bef. 1220 William Beauchamp, of Bedford (see 122A-29 (CP XII (1) note g, which says this Ida living 10 Apr 1262). Moriarty (ms. at NEHGS) suggested William Longespee had two daughters Ida, or Idoine, which may be correct. But there appears almost a generation difference between the two Ida's, so the chronicler may have missed a generation and Ida No 27 may be the daughter of William's son William II (122-29).
