• "Cornelis van der Westhuizen first lived with a Khoikhoi common-law wife, but after his marriage to a white woman, Claudina Engelbrecht, she forced him to break all contact with the Khoikhoi woman and her children. One of the children from Cornelis's first liaison was a beautiful girl, Nerina."

Like Cornelis van der Westhuizen, Willem Adriaan had married a Khoikhoi woman; but unlike Cornelis, Willem Adriaan had stayed with her and given his numerous offspring his name, from which there are thousands of Coloured descendants in Namaqualand to this day. Although no colour bar separated races at this time, as it did during Apartheid, Willem Adriaan's relationship with a Khoikhoi woman was clearly anathema to his two brothers, who disowned him."
