About Henry Laughter
Henry Laughter was born about 1708 in England (fn1) and died 19 October 1770 in Bute County, N.C. The original will of Henry Lawter (another name for Henry Laughter) is preserved in the original documents of Bute County, NC and is located at the Archives of the State Department of Archives and History, Raleigh, NC. A text version is attached (see documents).
The Laughters settled in early Bute, later Granville/Warren County, NC and lived close to the Virginia border on Hawtree Creek. Henry's son, John Laughter was a hatter during the American Revolution and made hats for the Revolutionary Army as well as participated in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.
Notes
Said to have come from England, no proof has been found on his parents. The first record found in NC, was on 20 March 1742 in Edgecombe County, NC. He was stated as living in Brunswick County, Va. at the time of purchase of land there. He sold the land that Mary Hogan had inherited in 1742 and moved his family to his land in NC where he bought an additional 40 acres in 1744. Granville County was formed from the part of Edgecombe County that his land was in. Henry lived on this land until 1751 when he sold 140 Acres and purchased 390 Acres from William Eaton in a deed recorded in Granville County Bute(Warren) County was formed from Granville County in 1764 and included the area Henry lived in. His Will is recorded in theMay Court of Bute County 1771. It was written on the 9th day of Oct 1770, therefore he must have died between these dates. He is buried on his plantation in an unmarked grave in Warren County, N.C. He was in Brunswick County, Va. in 1741/2, in Edgecombe County, N.C. in 1744 and in Granville County, NC in 1751.
