Biography

Henry Jernigan was born about 1655 the son of Thomas and Ann Jernigan. Henry lived in Nansemond County, Virginia his whole life. He did purchase land in Chowan Precinct, North Carolina, but his son Henry moved to North Carolina.[1]

Henry Jernigan, born 1685, son of the elder of Nansemond County, VA., purchased land in Chowan Precinct in North Carolina in 1715.At that time he stated that he was the son of Henry Jernigan the elder of Nansemond Co., Va. Later, in 1734, records in Deed Book D - p. 133 of Bertie County show that Henry Jernigan, Sr. of County of Nansemond in Virginia, purchased of Henry Overstreet and others land located in Bertie Precinct in North Carolina. This transaction was witnessed by "Henry Jernigan, Jr. and John Blackman, Jr."[2][3]

In Book E - p. 105, dated November 29, 1735, records show that Henry Jernigan of Virginia in the County of Nansemond, Planter, sold 100 acres of land for 10 lbs. Sterling, to John Blackman, Jr.Land located in Bertie Precinct. He extracted the spruce timber for his plantation's use that "said Jernigan now lives at."Thus, we would believe and feel reasonably cerain that Henry Jernigan, was the one who died in Bertie in May 1736, as it would seem unlikely that an old man would move from a plantation where he had spent a lifetime and move to a new home just six months before he died.[4]

The elder Henry has been conflated with son Henry, who died relatively young leaving minor children in 1736.
