About Henry Gaines
A carpenter by trade, got hurt while working on Johnnie Knight's bridge on the Saluda River, SC, and died from the effects of the wounds.
His great-grandson, Reubin Gaines, said that he had always been told that Henry was the youngest son of Richard Gaines. His tombstone is located in the Gaines Family or Clardy Family Cemetery, located on State Secondary Road #29 and adjoining Mrs. Ben Martin's yard on left going fromCamack School to Mt. Gallagher Baptist Church, Laurens, SC. He moved from Culpepper County, VA to Laurrens County,SC about 1790.
On October 12, 1792, Henry and two of his daughers, Molly and Catey, appear in the Turkey Creek Baptist Church Records, Abbeville, SC, as members. On July 14, 1794, Henry was a charater member of Popular Springs Baptist Church, Laurens, SC. July 1796 was the last mention of him as a member of the Church.

Henry was supposed to have been the youngest son of Richard Gaines (1686-1756) of Culpeper County, Virginia. His great-grandson, Reuben Gaines, said that he had always been told that Henry Gaines was the youngest son of Richard Gaines of Culpeper County, Virginia. (See page 11, Hudson Berry & His Descendents, by L. E. Berry and Mary B. Riley).
His tombstone is located in the Gaines Family or James Clardy Cemetery, located on State Secondary Road #29 and adjoining Mrs. Ben Martin's yard, on left going from Camack School to Mt. Gallagher Baptist Church, Laurens, South Carolina.
He was a carpenter by trade and received injuries while working on John Knight Bridge on the Saluda River, S.C. and died as a result of those injuries.
He removed from Culpeper County, Virginia where he was born, to Laurens County, South Carolina, about 1790. He married Maria Woods (Mrs. Mariah Woods Stepp). Miss Mary R. Riley of Anderson. S. C. stated that as a result of research by Mrs. George Glass, Washington, D.C. that this Henry apparently never owned land in Culpeper County, Virginia, as the only time he appears in the Culpeper County Records was in 1751-52 when he settled the estate of John Stepp, deceased, and married the widow, Mrs. Maria Stepp. On October 12, 1792 he and two of his daughters, Molly and Catey, appear in the Turkey Creek Baptist Church Records, Abbeville, South Carolina, as members. On July 14, 1794, he was a charter member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, Laurens County, S. C. He was last mentioned as a member of this church in July 1796.
Henry was the executor of the estate of his wife's first husband, John Stepp.
