Nathaniel Pettengill was born in Newbury, Essex County, Mass. on Sept 21,1654. He was the son of Richard and Joanna (Ingersoll) Pettengill. He was married twice. 1, Mary 2, Hannah Goodridge, daughter of Jeremiah and Mary ( Adams ) Goodridge.
Nathaniel was a farmer, for some reason he is not mentioned among those who took the oath of allegiance in 1678, nor among the tax payers in 1688; but he received a deed of a house and land in Newbury from Richard Pettengill July 14,1695.
Nathaniel Pettengill, husbandman, with his wife Hannah sold land adjoining that of Mathew and Samuel Pettengill to Richard Brown May 29,1711. Bought of Thomas Brown land near the common June 8,1715.
In his will, proved Feb.11,1717-18, he gave property to his wife Hannah and his children, Richard, Benjamin, Humphrey, Joseph, and Elizabeth. Elizabeth, single, bequeathed her property to her mother and brother Benjamin Dec.10,1736; she died a few days after. Hannah was made guardian of her sons, Humphrey and Benjamin, July 16,1727.
