About Hannah Bailey

MRS HANNAH BAILEY

Mrs Hannah Bailey, who died at Oxford last Saturday, at the age of eighty-four, was one of Canterbury’s old settlers. Born in Sussex, England, in 1833, she emigrated, with her husband, to New Zealand in the ship Castle Eden, which arrived in Lyttelton in February, 1851. This was the first ship arriving after the historic “first four.” After living in the neighbourhood of Christchurch for some time, she and her husband, Mr Richard Johnson, went to Cust, where they were married couple for Mr R. N. Higgins for some time. After this she lived in Rangiora, and in 1865 she and her family came to Oxford, where she lived till her death. In 1884 her husband died, and in I887 she was married to Mr William Bailey. By her first marriage she had four sons and four daughters, all of whom are still living, and no family by her second marriage. She was a woman of cheerful disposition, and maintained excellent health, engaging in her domestic activities till a few days before her death. She leaves eight children, fifty-four grandchildren, 114 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, making a total of 180 descendants living at the time oi her death.
