GODGIFU [Goda] (-before 1049). Her parentage is stated by Orderic Vitalis, who says that Godgifu went into exile in Normandy with her brother[1867] in 1013. According to Orderic Vitalis, her first marriage was arranged by Robert II Duke of Normandy[1868], indicating that she probably did not return to England after leaving for exile. However, this information is suspect, assuming that the charter of "Robertus Rex", which names "Comes Drogo…cum duobus fratribus Fulcone…et Rodulpho necnon uxore cum filiis supra memorati Drogonis", is correctly dated to 1025 as Duke Robert did not succeed as duke of Normandy until 1027[1869]. Another possibility is that Drogo's children at that date were born from an earlier otherwise unrecorded marriage. There is no indication of the birth dates of his known children, but the fact that none of them was given a typically Anglo-Saxon name also suggests that Godgifu may not have been the mother of all or any of them. Godgifu's second marriage is referred to by Florence of Worcester[1870].

Princess Goda married Count Dreux of Vexin in 1025. Count Dreux was born about 1000, lived in Vexin, France. He was the son of Walter Valois II and Countess Adele Senlis. He died in 1035 in Bythinia, Asia Minor .

Goda of England

(Old English: Godgifu; 1004 – 1055) was a Princess of England. She was the daughter of King Ethelred the Unready and his second wife Emma of Normandy, and sister of King Edward the Confessor. She married firstly Drogo of Mantes, count of the Véxin, and had a son by him: Ralph the Timid, earl of Hereford.

She married secondly Eustace II, count of Boulogne in 1025. This marriage was childless.

After the Norman Conquest of England by William the Conqueror, the lands owned by Goda in Buckinghamshire were given to the Norman knights Bertram de Verdun, lord of Farnham Royal, and Raoul, count of Fougères.

Often dismissed on the family tree, Goda was a Princess of England and sister to Edward the Confessor. She married first Drogo of Mantes Count of the Vexin, then Eustace II, count of Boulogne in 1035.

After the Norman Conquest of England by William the Conqueror, the lands owned by Goda in Buckinhamshire were given to Norman knights.

Goda of England (Old English: Godgifu; French: Godjifu; 1004 – c. 1047[1]) was a Princess of England. She was the daughter of King Ethelred the Unready and his second wife Emma of Normandy, and sister of King Edward the Confessor. She married firstly Drogo of Mantes, count of the Véxin, and had sons by him:

Ralph the Timid, earl of Hereford.

Walter III of the Vexin (d.1063), married Biota (d.1063), daughter of Herbert I of Maine, they both died in suspicious circumstances in the captivity of William I of England.

Fulk (d.1068)
