About Gnr. Harold Clarence de Ridder
Harold Clarence de Ridder was born in Liverpool, England, on 7 February 1892. His parents were Robert Potts de Ridder and Jane Ann de Ridder (née Tillock) who had married in South Shields on 25 February 1880. Robert and Ann seem to have separated in 1904 with Robert emigrating to New Zealand along with his sons Harold and Robert. Harold worked for the Bank of New Zealand in Wellington. During World War I he served with the New Zealand Field Artillery (Service No. WWI 2/489). He died of Influenza & Broncho Pneumonia during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic at the 18th General Hospital in Camiers, France, on 11 November 1918. 26-year-old Harold was buried in the Étaples Military Cemetery [XLIX.
