Gilbert, heir of Richard his father in England, held his castle of Tunbridge against William Rufus, but was wounded and captured. {-Encycl. Brit., 1956, 5:754} He founded the priory of Clare, 1090. For the Clare family, see on the Web: http://www.castlewales.com/clare.html
He was also Lord of Tonbridge & Cardigan. After Richard's death, his extensive properties in Normandy and England were divided between his two eldest sons. The Norman fiefs of Bienfaite and Orbec passed to Roger, while Gilbert, inherited the English honors of Clare and Tonbridge. While Gilbert fitz Richard I found himself at odds with the Conqueror's successor, William Rufus, he and other members of the family enjoyed great favor with Rufus' successor King Henry I. In 1110 Gilbert was granted the lordship of Ceredigion (Cardigan) in
southwestern Wales, and immediately embarked upon an intensive campaign to subjugate the area.

Gilbert conquered lands in Wales to become Earl of Pembroke.
He married Adeliza de Clermont, daughter of Hugues I, comte de Clermont en Beauvaisis and Margaret de Roucy, in England. They had nine children, including our ancestors Gilbert and Adeliza.
He held Tonbridge Castle against Rufus (who would become King William II), but he was later reconciled, after King William I's death in 1088. He was involved in rebellion between 1088 and 1095.
It would seem that the de Clare family was keen to establish a leading role in British politics from an early stage. He founded the Priory of Stoke-by-Clare, Suffolk, in 1090.

Gilbert was our ancestor through two distinct descent lines--through his son Gilbert and his daughter Adeliza, each of whom was independently our ancestor.

He was the earl of Hertfordshire, but references rarely indicated the county; he was consistently called Earl Gilbert or Gilbert earl of Clare. Gilbert may have been present at the suspicious death of William II in the New Forest in 1100. He was granted lands and the Lordship of Cardigan by Henry I, including Cardigan Castle. He founded the Cluniac priory at Stoke-by-Clare, Suffolk. He married Adeliza/Alice de Claremont, daughter of Hugh, Count of Clermont, and Margaret de Roucy. She remarried one of the sons of Hervé de Montmorency after his death.
Abbot of Ely
Gilbert Fitz Richard (c. 1066–c. 1117), was styled de Clare, de Tonbridge, and Lord of Clare. He was a powerful Anglo-Norman baron who was granted the Lordship of Cardigan, in Wales c. 1107-1111
Life
Gilbert, born before 1066, was the second son and an heir of Richard Fitz Gilbert of Clare and Rohese Giffard. He succeeded to his father's possessions in England in 1088 when his father retired to a monastery; his brother, Roger Fitz Richard, inherited his father's lands in Normandy. That same year he, along with his brother Roger, fortified his castle at Tonbridge against the forces of William Rufus. But his castle was stormed, Gilbert was wounded and taken prisoner. However he and his brother were in attendance on king William Rufus at his death in August 1100. He was with Henry I at his Christmas court at Westminster in 1101.
It has been hinted, by modern historians, that Gilbert, as a part of a baronial conspiracy, played some part in the suspicious death of William II. Frank Barlow points out that no proof has been found he had any part in the king's death or that a conspiracy even existed.
In 1110, King Henry I took Cardigan from Owain ap Cadwgan, son of Cadwgan ap Bleddyn as punishment for a number of crimes including that of the abduction of Nest, wife of Gerald de Windsor. In turn Henry gave the Lordship of Cardigan, including Cardigan Castle to Gilbert Fitz Richard. He founded the Clunic priory at Stoke-by-Clare, Suffolk. Gilbert died in or before 1117. Family
About 1088, Gilbert married Adeliza/Alice de Claremont, daughter of Hugh, Count of Clermont, and Margaret de Roucy. Gilbert and Adeliza had at least eight children:
- Richard Fitz Gilbert de Clare, d. 1136.
- Gilbert Fitz Gilbert de Clare, d. 1148, 1st Earl of Pembroke.
- Baldwin Fitz Gilbert de Clare, d. 1154, m. Adeline de Rollos.
- Adelize/Alice de Clare, d. 1163, m. (ca. 1105), Aubrey II de Vere, son of Aubrey I de Vere and Beatrice. She had 9 children and in her widowhood was a corrodian at St. Osyth's, Chich, Essex.

"Gilbert de Clare, 2nd Lord of Clare, 2nd Lord of Tonbridge, and 1st Lord of Cardigan was the son of Richard fitz Gilbert, 1st Lord of Clare, 1st Lord of Tonbridge (1035–1090) and Rohese de Giffard. He married Adeliza de Breteuil and had eight children by that marriage. He was one of the first to use the "de Clare" designation instead of "Fitz" after the Honor of Clare (his English Barony).
He succeeded to his father's possessions in England in 1088 when his father retired to a monastery whilst his brother, Roger Fitz Richard, inherited his father's lands in Normandy. In 1088 he fortified his castle at Tonbridge against the forces of His Majesty, King William II Rufus of England, but the King's forces managed to take the castle and Lord de Clare was taken prisoner. After the death of King Rufus in August 1100, he attended the court of King Henry I at Westminster in 1101.
In 1110, King Henry I took Cardigan from HRH Owain ap Cadwgan, Prince of Powys (1070-1116), son of HRH Cadwgan ap Bleddyn, Prince of Powys (1051-1111) as punishment for a number of crimes and gave the Lordship of Cardigan, including Cardigan Castle to Gilbert de Clare. He also founded the Clunic priory at Stoke-by-Clare, Suffolk."
