- The House of Neville (also the House of Nevill) is a noble house of early medieval origin, which was a leading force in English politics in the later Middle Ages. The family became one of the two major powers in northern England along with the House of Percy and played a central role in the Wars of the Roses.
- .... etc.
- The family can be traced back to one Uhtred, whose son Dolfin is first attested in 1129, holding the manor of Staindrop (formerly Stainthorp) in County Durham, which shared with a vast church estate and some limited common in 14,000 acres (5,700 ha).[2] This locality remained the principal seat of the family until 1569, their chief residence being at Raby in the north of the parish of Staindrop, where in the 14th century they built the present Raby Castle, King Knut the Great (or Canute) having a mansion here previously.[3] Dolfin was succeeded by his son Meldred and he in turn by his son Robert fitz Maldred, who married the Norman heiress Isabel de Néville. Their son Geoffrey de Neville inherited the estates of his mother's family as well as his father's, and adopted their surname, which was borne by his descendants thereafter. In Norman-ruled England a Norman surname was more prestigious and socially advantageous than an English one.[4]
- .... etc.
- The family's wealth and power grew steadily over the following centuries. Their regional power benefited greatly from frequent appointment to royal offices such as sheriff, castellan, justice of the forest and justice of the peace in various parts of northern England. This prominent office-holding began with Geoffrey de Neville's son Robert, in the reign of Henry III, whom Robert supported against the barons under Simon de Montfort.[7] The Nevilles also held administrative office under the prince-bishops of Durham.[8] Robert's grandson Ralph Neville was one of the founding members of the Peerage of England, being summoned to sit in the House of Lords at its establishment in 1295 and thus initiating the line of Barons Neville de Raby. Service in the wars of the late 13th and 14th centuries against Scotland and later in the Hundred Years War in France was of key importance in further magnifying the family's standing.[9] In 1334 Ralph Neville, Lord of Raby .... etc.

- Neville, Geoffrey de (d.1285) by Albert Frederick Pollard
- NEVILLE, GEOFFREY de (d. 1285), baron, son of Geoffrey de Neville (d. 1249), and younger brother of Robert de Neville (d. 1282) [q. v.], first appears as taking an active part in the barons' war, siding, like most of his family, with the king. .... etc.
- Like his father, Neville is said to have married a Margaret, daughter of John de Longvillers (d. 1255), who brought him Hoton Longvillers and various other manors. Geoffrey, and after his death his widow, had considerable difficulty in proving their titles to some of these manors when Edward I instituted his ‘quo warranto’ inquiry (Placita de Quo Warranto, pp. 186, &c.) By Margaret, who survived him many years, Neville had one son, John, from whom were descended the Nevilles of Hornby.

- Neville, Robert de by Albert Frederick Pollard
- NEVILLE, ROBERT de, second Baron Neville of Raby (d. 1282), was the eldest son of Geoffrey Fitz-Robert or Neville (d. 1249), and his wife Margaret, daughter of Sir John de Longvillers. His younger brother, Geoffrey (d. 1285), is separately noticed. Robert was only a Neville on the mother's side; his grandfather, Robert Fitz-Maldred, lord of Raby, who was descended from Uchtred, son-in-law of Ethelred II, and fourth son of Gospatrick, earl of Northumberland, married Isabella, daughter and, after the death of her brother Henry, sole heiress of Geoffrey de Neville (d. 1194) and his wife Emma. Their son Geoffrey Fitz-Robert assumed the name Neville on account of the great possessions he inherited from his mother, including Brancepeth and Sheriff-Hutton; and became first Baron Neville of Raby (Foster, Yorkshire Pedigrees, vol. i; Surtees, Stock of Nevill, pp. 2–6).
- .... etc.
- Neville married Ida, or Isabella, widow of Roger de Bertram, baron of Mitford. By her he had two sons, Robert and John; Robert, the elder, predeceased his father in 1271, and his son, Ranulf or Ralph, third baron, was father of Ralph de Neville (1291?–1367) [q. v.]; from him were descended the earls of Salisbury and Westmorland and barons of Abergavenny, who were thus in the male line of Anglo-Saxon descent. A charter of Neville's, with his seal, is preserved in the British Museum (MSS. Index of Seals).
