  • Thomas, son of and heir of THomas and Maude Joscelyn, in 1285 married Alice Litton or Lifton. He died in 1305, leaving a son, Ralph, who in 1301, by his marriage with Maude Sutton, daughter of Sir John Sutton, became the owner of Shelton-Bowells in County Essex, one of the most picturesque family seats of England.
    • Ralph held ona and on-half Knight's fees in the village of Shellowe in Essex and Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire. He died in 1312.
      • ' Geoffrey Joselyn, eldest son of Ralph, born in 1312, married Margaret Rokell, daughter of Sir Robert Rokell. he lived at Sheldon Bowells until 1338, when he made a grant of it to Robert de Marshall and Margery, his wife, during their lives. It soon passed to the Torrell family, in whose possession it remained until it again reverted to the Jocelyn family, of whom John Jocely, Esquire, died in its possession in 1525.
        • Ralph Joselyn, son of Geoffrey, succeeded his father's estates. He married Margaret Patmore, a daughter of Sir John Patmore, by whom he had a son, Geoffrey, who married Catherine Bray, a daughter of Sir Thomas Bray. This Geoffrey died in 1425 and is buried at Sawbridgeworth.
          • Thomas, eldest son and heir, in 1428 married Alice Duke, daughter of Lewis Duke of Essex. To them was born a son, George, known as George Joslyn, the Courtier, on account of his accomplishments and courtly grace. he married Maude Bardolph, daughter of Edmund Bardolph.

  • 10. THOMAS10 JOCELYN, of Hide Hall, Sawgridgeworth, co. Herts, born about 1249, died about 1284. He married first ALICE LISTON, daugher of William: and secondly JOAN BLOUNT, daughter of John. Joan (Blount) Jocelyn survived her husband, and married secondly, about 1285, ____ de la Le; and as Joan de la Le, late wife of Thomas Josselyn the Elder, she released, by deed undated but enrolled in Trinity Term, 13 Edward I [May-June 1285], her rights of dower in her late husband's lands to Adam de Stratton, clerk, during the minority of the heirs of Thomas, son of Thomas Jocelyn. She married thirdly Thomas Marshall.

Essex, born at Shellow-Bowels 13 Dec. 1275, died after 1312-13 and before 1323. he married first ANNE SANDYS, eldest daughter of William; and secondly MAUD SUTTON, daugher of Sir John, Knight, who married secondly Roger de Berners and died in 1354-5.
    • Ralph Jocelyn succeeded his brother Thomas about 1284, and had livery of his father's lands in Oct. 1297, having proved his age. In his deposition on this occasion Ralph de Merk of Roothing, co. Essex, aged forty years, stated that Ralph Jocellyn, son of THomas, was twenty-one years of age on the Feast of St. Lucy the Virgin pervious, that he was born at Shellow and was baptized in the parish church of Willingale-Doe on the fourth day after his birth, and that he, the deponent held him at the font and give him his name.
    • Ralph Jocelyn held court at Shellow-Bowels in 1298. On 8 Oct. 1302 he held on and a half knight's fees in Shellow and Sawbridgeworth. In 1309 he was a commissioner to collect a tax in Hertfordshire, for the war with Scotland. He was living 24 Feb. 1312/13.

      • ' 12. JEFFREY12 JOCELYN, of Hide Hall in Sawbridgeworth, co. Herts, and of the manor of Shellow-Bowels or Shellow-Jocelyn in Willingale-Doe, co. Essex. died between 1360 and 1373. he married MARGARET ROKELL, daughter of Robert. On 28 Dec. 1338 he leased the manor of Shellow-Jocelyn to Robert le Marshall of Northweld and Margery his wife during their lives, subject to a rent charge of L6 a year during the life of his (Jeffrey's) mother. This manor passed out of the Josselyn family into the possession of the Torrell family, being called Torrell's Hall or Shellow-Torrell; but it came again into the possession of the Josselyns some two hundred years later (vide infra, 23).

        • 13. RALPH13 JOCELYN, of Hide Hall in Sawbridgeworth, co. Herts, succeeded to his father's lands not later than 1373 and died about 1383. he married MARGARET DE PATMER, daughter and heiress or coheiress of John, this John de Patmer being son of John and Sara de Patmer and grandson of Philip de Patmer of Patmer Hall and his wife, who was daughter and heiress of John Bawde of Somerby, co. Lincoln. in 1373 Ralph Jocelyn held half a knight's fee in Sawbridgeworth.
