Gentleman Thomas Prater

Thomas was a gentleman of the manor Eaton Water. He was raised at Eaton Water and Staton St. Bernard in Wiltshire. As an adult he lived at Eaton Water House, Eaton Water, on the Cricklade, Wiltshire, England.

He must have gained his position by the grace of other family members and his wife's dowry. He was not a wealthy person but he owned his own land at Eaton Water. His business was the woolen trade, farming and ferrier. Eaton Water was located on the banks of the Thames River where he owned a ferry. Eaton Water was part of the old family estates that also consisted of Latton Manor and Inglesham Manor, all of which sat along the banks of of the Thames River at Northern Wiltshire on what is called the Cricklade. Stanton St. Bernard Manor is located in South Central Wiltshire about 50 miles south of Eaton Water Manor.

Stanton St. Bernard Manor was owned by Thomas's father, Anthony Prater. Anthony Prater was excommunicated, lost almost all of his property by the time of his death in the late 1500s. His son Thomas being the youngest son had little or no inheritance. Thomas mother died at his birth and little is known about his childhood. We do know that he was taken as a newborn to relatives in the families of North Wilshire Estates to be suckled and cared for.

• The demesne farm was held from successive earls by beneficial leases, for years on lives renewable by fines. By c. 1554 it was held by George Prater (fn. 30) and in 1567 by his son Anthony. (fn. 31) Much litigation was brought about by Anthony's extortionate activities in Stanton, as a result of which he was several times bound over at quarter sessions, (fn. 32) excommunicated, subjected to the compelling intervention in Stanton of Henry earl of Pembroke's rent collectors, and possibly imprisoned. (fn. 33) He was described in 1601 as 'a troublesome man'. (fn. 34) Anthony's occupation of the demesne is implied in 1592, (fn. 35) but by 1594 he was dead. (fn. 36) He had sons Thomas and William who surrendered the land in 1602. (fn. 37) It was then leased to Thomas Baskerville (d. 1620–1), (fn. 38) and was afterwards held by his widow Joan. (fn. 39)

Thomas' mother died at his birth and little is known about hischildhood, but we do know that he was taken as a new born child torelatives in the North Wiltshire estates to be suckeled and cared for.He may have been raised by these relatives util his father remarriedor he may have styayed with these relatives until his adulthood.Thomas lived at Eaton Water House when his son Thomas Prather (Prater)was born in 1604 [this Thomas came to America in 1622].

This Thomas was the first born son, and it is believed that he wasnamed Anthony Thomas after his father. However, his name is inscribed"Thomas" on his mother's tomb. It is also believed that his 6th bornbrother was named Thomas Anthony Prater, but his brother is alsostated as "Thomas" on their mother's tomb. We do know that the first"Thomas" died young and the second "Thomas" may have been named forhim.
