Men Åle blev viking; på grund af sit held i den håndtering fik han (til)navnet Åle hinn fræckne. Frode begyndte også at blive berømt for sine mange bedrifter og blev kald den Store eller Berømte. Han havde sit kongesæde i Lejre og Ringsted. Ligesom sin fader oprettede han en hird, hvor han underholdt adskillige krigere med kæmpekræfter, og i spidsen for dem satte han Starkad. Han havde også tolv jarler under sig.
