O'Neill was an American professor of Greek literature.
O'Neill was son of Nobel Prize-winning playwright Eugene O'Neill and the elder O'Neill's first wife, Kathleen Jenkins. The couple divorced in 1912. O'Neill once said he did not even meet his father until age 12. O'Neill graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University in 1932, where he was a member of Skull and Bones. He earned a PhD in philosophy in 1936. He taught at Yale, Sarah Lawrence College, and the New School for Social Research.
Suicide: "The 40-year-old goateed professor slashed the artery in his left wrist Monday as he sat in an empty bathtub in his lonely mountain-top house a mile from the Woodstock artists' colony. Then he slashed at his legs and staggered downstairs to die."
