The summer of 1689 was devastating for the Smith's with three consecutive deaths, leaving one child and both parents dead, and orphaning eight surviving children over the course of just six days. The cause was some sort of flu-like pandemic:
- John Smith (son): b. 26 Dec 1674; d. 8 Jul 1689
- Elizabeth (Bliss) Smith: d. 10 July 1689.
- William Smith: d. 14 July 1689.
The son Obadiah and the seven daughters went to Norwich to live with relatives.
