Elizabeth Stennett Mounts
Mrs. Elizabeth Mounts, wife of Joseph Mounts, survived her husband from September 3rd to February 1st , 1900. She was a great sufferer with that dread disease, asthma, for a number of years before her death, nine days before her death lung fever set in and hastened the tender cord to sever that hung between life and death. She bore her affliction with Christian fortitude, never murmuring or complaining until death relieved her of her suffering. The last words Mother Mounts spoke was, " I want rest, rest," and she fell asleep in that blessed hope of rest in her Heavenly Home in that House of Many Mansions, where all the true and faithful ones are enjoying the rest she so much longed for. Our Heavenly Father says in My House are Many Mansions, if the were not so, I would not have told you. I go to prepare a place for you and if I come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there may ye be also." Mother Mounts came to Scott County, Iowa with her husband on August the 12th 1835. She was the mother of 10 children, 8 of whom survive her. Heavenly Home before Father and Mother were called. Her children were all born in Scott County except her oldest son, Sylvester Mounts who was born near Albion, Illinois. Her parents were Charles and Nancy Stennett. Her Mother's maiden name was Nancy Chort [Short]. Her father was a native of Virginia and her mother of Tennessee. THey had a family of 14 children, Mrs. Mounts being the youngest. Has she lived till the 13th of June she would have been 83 years old. She was born the 13th of June 1817 in Washington County, Kentucky. She was the last surviving one of the family of brothers and sisters. She leaves a large number of nephews and nieces, some of which still live in Cass Co. Iowa near Red Oak. One of her nephews, Mr. Wayne Stennett was at one time President of the Bank of Red Oak. Besides friends and neighbors to mourn her loss which was manifested at here funeral were a large funeral procession followed her to her last resting place. She was laid by the side of her husband in the Blue Grass Cemetery, Febrary __th, 1900. The minister read the 14th Chapter of St. John and the 23rd Psalm. She had selected previous to her death, two hymns that she wanted sung. One was, "O Thou Fount of Every Blessing," the other, "Jesus Lover of my Soul". Then some dear friends sung at her grave as the coffin was being lowered, "Bless be the Tie that Binds our Hearts." Thus ended the life of a kind Mother, a good wife and neighbor. Mother Mounts was a member of the Christian Church, in good standing, always faithful in discharge in her ever known duties (?) ever ready to help the poor and needy.
