Colonel Mark’s wife, Electa Sargeant, was born at Stockbridge, Massachusetts in 1740, the first white child born at that place.

Her father, the Rev. John Sargeant (1710-1749) was the first missionary to the Stockbridge Indians. Through the efforts of Mark’s uncle, Rev. Samuel Hopkins, of Springfield, Mass., the Mission was established in 1734 and Mr. Sargeant placed in charge. He translated part of the Bible into the Indian language, and died amidst the scenes of his successful labors on 27 July 1749. His son was the fourth missionary to these Indians and accompanied them (being then about 450) in number, in 1787, to their new home in Oneida County, New York.

She was the first white child born in Stockbridge. Her childhood home "Mission House" is a National Historic Landmark in Stockbridge.
