Biography

Edmond Perry and Sarah Perry were the first to come to Sandwich, Massachusetts, United States, from Devonshire, England, sometime between 1624 and 1627. A Quaker, he was in frequent trouble with the authorities on account of his religious beliefs. He married Sarah Crowell, daughter of John Crowell and Elishua [Unknown], in Oct. 10, 1614 in Bridford, Devonshire, England [19],[20],[34] (Sarah Crowell was born about 1592 in County Devonshire, England,[19],[20],[34] died before 7 Jun 1659 in Sandwich, Barnstable, MA [19],[20] and was buried in 1659 in Sandwich, Barnstable, MA [34]

Edmond Perry was born on 27 Jan 1587/88 in Devonshire, England. He was the son of John PERRY and [__?__]. His mother was probably not Judith VASSELL (1567 – 1650). He married Sarah BETTS in 1613 in Bridford, Devonshire, England. Edmund reportedly emigrated to Plymouth Colony (Sandwich) in 1637 and died shortly thereafter. Another source says Edmond Perry and his wife Sarah cam to America in 1639 on the ship “Lion.” However Irving says Edward died in 1614 before the rest of his family emigrated to America. This theory says that Sarah Perry, the widow of Edmund Perry, emigrated to America with her children, but no husband.

Edmund Perry is not listed in Savage's Genealogical Dictionary, Anderson's Great Migration Directory, Farmer's Genealogical Register, or Holme's Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families. In short, without primary source documentation, the facts for this family are at present impossible to ascertain.

There is a considerable amount of conflicting information about Edmund Perry and his wife Sarah. Most of the information comes from family histories that differ in their accounts, though most agree he was born about 1588 in Devon, England. Some say Edmund emigrated to Plymouth Colony in 1637 or 1639 and died shortly thereafter in Sandwich. Others say he died 07 Jun 1659 in Sandwich. Still others say he died in England in 1614 before the rest of the family emigrated to America. Edmund's wife Sarah's maiden name is also in dispute. Some say Betts, some say Crowell.

The file Perry.txt gives a number of generations of Edmund Perry’s descendants. The names of his children were taken from that file. It is reported that Edmund was an immigrant in 1637. In this case, all of his children were immigrants with him. [1] Death date from Irving is 1614, which is not likely. Irving places birth date (incorrectly?) at 27 Jan 1599 and the place of death (incorrectly!) as Sandwich, Massachusetts. 1614 is probably the date of marriage. Lander has marriage in 1612: "It is reported that Edmund was an immigrant in 1637."
