Edis Appling Swilling of Sheridan, Ark., was born at Grapevine, Ark., on May 11, 1903, the daughter of the late John Henry and Phara Johnson Appling. She died Dec. 26, 1998 at the Sheridan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 95 years. She was a housewife, a member of the First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, and the widow of Rudy Swilling.

Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Virgil and Jenny Swilling, Sheridan; daughter and son-in-law, Maxine and Cledis Davenport, Little Rock; four grandchildren, Pat Loper, Loveland, Colo., Melinda Butzlaff, Bryant, Stacey Swilling, Memphis; DeAnna Swilling, Baton Rouge, La.; four great-grandchildren.
