Eddie Asner[1] (/ˈæsnər/; born November 15, 1929), also credited as Edward Asner, is an American actor, voice actor, and a former president of the Screen Actors Guild. He is primarily known for his role as Lou Grant during the 1970s and early 1980s, on both The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin-off series Lou Grant, making him one of the few television actors to portray the same character in both a comedy and a drama. He is the most honored male performer in the history of the Primetime Emmy Awards, having won seven, five for portraying Lou Grant (three as Supporting Actor in a Comedy Television Series and two as Lead Actor in a Dramatic Television Series). His other Emmys were for performances in two of the most significant mini-television series of the 1970s: Rich Man, Poor Man (1976), where he won for Outstanding Lead Actor for a Single Performance in a TV series, and Roots (1977), for which he won for Outstanding Single Performance by a Supporting Actor in a TV series.[2]

He played John Wayne's adversary Bart Jason in the 1966 Western El Dorado. He has played Santa Claus in several films, notably in 2003's Elf.[3] In 2009, he starred as the voice of Carl Fredricksen in Pixar's animated film Up, and made a guest appearance on CSI: NY in the episode "Yahrzeit". In early 2011, Asner returned to television as butcher Hank Greziak in Working Class, the first original sitcom on cable channel CMT. He starred in the Canadian television series Michael, Tuesdays and Thursdays, on CBC Television and appeared in the 2013 television series The Glades. Asner guest-starred as Guy Redmayne, a homophobic billionaire who supports Alicia Florrick's campaign, in the sixth season of The Good Wife.

He got his start as a performer on a high school radio station. Later while attending the University of Chicago from 1947 to 1949, he acted in several stage productions. From 1951 to 1953, he served in the United States Army after being drafted. He later went back to Chicago where he, along with several budding actors, formed the Playwrights Theatre. He left Chicago in 1955 for New York City after leaving the Playwrights Theatre due to a disagreement over its format. While in New York, he performed in various off-Broadway productions. He would go on to appear in such films as "The Venetian Affair," (1966) "El Dorado," (1966) "They Call Me Mister Tibbs!," (1970) "Fort Apache the Bronx," (1981) "JFK," (1991) and "Elf." (2003) He also performed in several television miniseries such as the popular "Roots" and "Rich Man, Poor Man." During his career, he also voiced numerous animated series and films. From 1981 to 1985, he held the influential post of president of the Screen Actors Guild and during this time, fought against U.S. involvement in Central America. He was involved in numerous other liberal political causes. During his career, he earned many awards and honors including seven Emmy Awards, five Golden Globe Awards, and a SAG Life Achievement Award in 2001.

American actor. Born Edward David Asner, he was best known as Lou Grant on the "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" that aired in the 70s and 80s and a spin-off show called "Lou Grant". His career started in 1950 and ended at his death in 2021. For all of his hard work, he received 25 awards and was nominated 47 times for awards. The major awards he won were 5 Golden Globe Awards, and 7 Primetime Emmy Awards. From 1961 until 2012, he appeared in 70 films most notably "El Dorado" in 1967, "O'Hara's Wife' in 1982, and "Elf" in 2003 playing in the role of Santa, the role he loved most to play. From 1957 until 2012, he appeared in over 100 television shows and series like"Gunsmoke", "The Fugitive", "The Mod Squad", "Rhoda", and "Roots". He did voice overs for video games. His parents were immigrants. His father was Morris David Asner and his mother was Lizzie Seliger. He attended Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas where his family had moved to and the University of Chicago. He worked on the GM assembly line and served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. While there he was part of a touring group that preformed all over Europe for the troops. He served two terms as president of the Screen Actors Guild. He was very active and involved in many causes to include a movement to free Mumia Abu-Jamal and the movement to establish California One Care. He was married twice and divorced at the time of his death. He had 4 children. He died of natural causes at his home in Tarzana.
