From WV Pioneers

William Casto, Jr., usually spoken of as “Devil Bill”, was a son of William Casto, and lived on Tug Fork [Jackson County, WV] at the mouth of Grass Run, one mile below Staats Mill.

His wife was Martha Parsons, a sister of Captain Billy Parsons, the pioneer of Ripley. He had eight sons and four daughters. Three sons, David, Jacob and Augustus were in the Union Army. One of the daughters married Nicholas Casto [her cousin].

William Casto lived to be one hundred and three years old. Many are the droll stories told of his mischievous humor. He was usually spoken of as “Devil Bill”, because of his mischievous disposition and habit of playing pranks. The Casto’s, being a large family and with the same names appearing often in the different families, had a descriptive name attached to distinguish them, as did many other families, such as “Turkey Bill”, “Devil Bill”, “Big John”, etc.

1860 US Census

William (Devil Bill) (60 something) and Martha (56) appear on the 1860 census in Elk Fork, Jackson Co., VA along with two of their children, Sandusky (18) and Jacob (14). His nickname "Devil" appears in parentheses beside his real name, William on the census.

Note: Sandusky (aka Augustus) died in the Civil War in 1862.

In the 1880 Jackson county census, son William states his father was born in PA, his mother in Ireland. (This is incorrect - she was born in the US.)

"William Casto a brother of James was known as "Devil Bill" due to his mischievous humor, he was always "deviling" someone. Once when quite old he had gone across Tug Fork to do something, when one of his boys being working around the barn heard him crying out and clutching his chest and staggering around. Presently he just fell over and lay without moving. Scared half to death the boy ran through the creek without using the swinging bridge and raced up to his father. When the lad had gotten close enough he jumped nimbly to his feet and gave a great horse laugh slapping his legs in glee. That was one wet and mad young man!"

Another tale told about "Devil Bill" concerns an equivocal marriage ceremony. It has been repeated that late one night a young couple came to his door looking for a preacher to marry them. Bill graciously invited them in, allowing them to continue believing he was the Rev. George Casto, also of Statts Mill. After performing a mock ceremony, he insisted that they accept the hospitality of his home for the night rather than travel the mud road. The next morning he admitted his prank with much glee and directed them to the real preacher.

Devil Bill was also a great storyteller. The following story is reportedly from one of his great great grandchildren, Cass Casto:

"He said he woke up one morning and walked out on the front porch, to disc over a giant squirrel, he said it was so big he was afraid to shoot it, for fear it would just wound it and it would attack him and kill him so he went inside and got (Tilly's) (his wife's) snuff can and rolled it out beside of the animal, then he said the animal preyed the lid off and choked to death. He said he didn't know just how big this animal was, but Tilly canned 17 pints of squirrel livers from it. Supposedly, he was also called Broken Jaw Bill due to falling out of a top story window and breaking his jaw. He never got it set, and when he ate food such as biscuits he would mash them flat with the palms of his hand and smash them in his jaw."
