Origins
Richard [Tozier] was the first of this name in the New World. The place and date of his birth are not found. Since he was married in 1656 it would be reasonable to assume that he was born c. 1630. He was killed by Indians 16 Oct 1675 in that part of Old Kittery now called Berwick, ME. He married 3 July 1656 at Boston to Judith Smith, dau. of Thomas & grand-dau. of Simon of Stepney, Surry, England. Simon's wife was Martha Oldfield. Richard lived first at Boston. By 1659 he was in Cocheco (Dover), NH & moved to Salmon Falls (on the Berwick side) later in the year.
Of his children there was a second Richard who was b. c. 1600 at Berwick (Salmon Falls). He married Elizabeth Wentworth, dau. of William, who was the widow of James Sharp, having married him before 7 Dec 1680. At this point there is uncertainty as to how the line carries down to John of Georgetown.
Savage says only that Richard Jr. had several children (none named John) and "perhaps more."
"Old Kittery and Her Families" suggests that son John, of the first Richard, who was b. c. 1663, was "possibly the father of John Tozer of Georgetown."
This is echoed in "The Wentworth Genealogy" which says that Richard Sr. had a son John who might have been the father of John of Georgetown (but overlooks the fact that since the latter was born c. 1722, his father would have been about 57 at the time). Nothing is said of a wife of this John.
An article in the NEHGR (Vol. XVI) suggests that John of Georgetown may have been a grandson of Richard Jr.
A study of the family by David Ernest Tozier says that there was a family tradition that John of Georgetown was the son of Richard Jr. but then goes on to say that Richard & Elizabeth are thought to have had no children and that given Richard's birth c. 1660 and Elizabeth's in 1653 it is unlikely they would have been the parents of John of Georgetown.
Another theory has been proposed in which Simon, son of Richard Sr., had a son John b. 8 Aug 1695 who m. 1718 Experience Jackson, dau. of Edward & Mary of Newton. Although there is no record of the birth of a son John to them, they did have children in the 1720's, so there could have been an unrecorded son John b. c. 1722.
John & Sarah's marriage intentions were recorded at Georgetown, 11 Jul 1747.
