Biography

Daniel was born in 1746 in Virginia, the son of Richard Hazel & Margaret ?[1]

Daniel was 14 when his father’s estate was settled. He likely died as a result of the French and Indian War 1754-1763. Many white settlers has entered this area after 1750, but faced Native American resistance. After 1754 most of the settlers moved back east to safety. White settlements before 1768/1770 were without government approval, and during the war most of the early settlements were destroyed.[2] After the end of the war in 1763 it was still illegal for settlers to be in this area. It opened up in 1768 but was still very dangerous.

From 1754-1769 the Hazel family lived at Patterson Creek in the Tygart Valley River area in what is now West Virginia (though Patterson Creek seems too far to the east of Tygart Valley River to intersect.)

Daniel then lived in Hampshire County, VA. In March, 1774, Joel Westfall and Daniel Hazel appointed constables in Augusta County, Virginia. Daniel was also a part of the militia to fight against Indian raids.

Daniel married Eve Burrough probably about 1775 in Virginia.

Moved to the Holston River area of Washington County, Virginia (1779-1784); these years Daniel was a constable in Washington Co, VA along with Jeremiah Abell.
1782 Daniel Hazel in on the Washington Co, VA Tax list near Gate City (Scott Co). (6 horses, 15 cattle).

Moved to Harrodsburg, Kentucky (1784-1793);
1785 110 people (including Daniel Hazel) petitioned the state legislature to establish the town of Harrodsburg.
1787 Daniel was appointed constable. He was exempt from tax in 1787 because he was a constable.
In 1794 and 1795 Daniel and Eve bought and sold some land 7 miles SE of Crogham’s “Locust Grove” in Louisville.

1795 Sarah Hazel m Aaron Corn

Moved to Smithland, Kentucky (1799-1805); 1797 Croghan hired Daniel to survey Smithland, KY.

And finally he moved to Randolph County in the Indiana (Northwest) Territory, later to become Pope County, Illinois (1806 until his death). The first settlement in this area was in 1798 at Golconda, so he wasn't far behind.

Illinois became a state in 1818.
Daniel states in his 1818/19 pension application that he served 9 months in 1777 (enlisted for 1 year) in the Virginia Line under Capt. Henry Paulding and Col. Abraham Bowman. Daniel's likely brother, Henry, was in Capt. Abel Westfall's Co. of the 8th Va. Reg't of Foot commanded by Col. Abraham Bowman.
